Postcard showing Gerard street 1930's?

More likely 1950s due to the design of the concrete street lighting.

Cromptons factory building on the right, was completed in 1939.
I would think this photo is late 1940's.

Don't think think they had trams running in the fifties

Think it's a trolley bus Bill, not a tram. They ran through Ashton on the Atherton/St.Helens route until the late 50s.

They are not trams, they are trolley buses. They had them in the 1950's.

Some of the trolley busses ran all the way from St Helens to Atherton, I think it was the No 1. Others only ran from St Helens to Ashton, the No 3. These had to do a three point turn into Princess Rd, holding up the traffic. It was a bit of a palaver disconnecting the trolley and fixing it onto the other line. We used to watch them doing it when we were kids.
