Is this what is now ashfield house ?.x
This completely intrigued me. Was there more than one place called "The Limes" in Standish at that time? My photo of the Limes which I have from early 1900's when my Lewis grandparents owned the farm "the Limes" certainly isn't at fancy as this house. The facades are completely different. Can't tie in the chimneys either, but the size and shape of the houses looks about the same. Can anyone at all help with this?
I think it was down Limes Avenue, Boars Head
Hi Sheryl, you may be right? could be me jumping to conclusions as the caption does say THE LIMES WIGAN but I have never heard of THE LIMES in Wigan so I presumed it was the Standish LIMES.
Yes it is the Limes at Boar's Head Standish. I was born on the old Limes estate, myself and family lived there until its demolition.
Sheryl, the Limes farmhouse was just off Wigan Road in Standish, as you will know, whereas the big house and its gardens, "the Limes" in this photo, was behind it to the east. (It's all clearly shown on the reprint of the 1907 Ordnance Survey map of "Standish (Boar's Head)")
David, is that you who I had quite a bit of contact with via email a couple of yrs ago about the Limes farm? If so, what a nice surprise to see yr comment here! I hope you are well, and my research of ancestry has had to be put on the back burner, due to other things- as can happen. But seeing this picture has rekindled the interest in geneology again. lol!
I was sent the url for a great map site today. To see the positions of Limes Farm and The Limes, take a look at this map: http://maps.nls.uk/view/101102813
Good map, Rev David. Excellent detail.
If you press F11 on your keyboard you get the map full screen.
Sheryl, how come you live on the other side of the world and come up with something like this ? I never knew of the existence of The Limes,Standish. I have looked at the map and see that this is very near to where Limes Farm stood. If you look at another entry "The Limes Lodge" this is still standing and I can only assume it was the lodge to this house. Beautiful house, pity a lot of these old houses got demolished.
Yes Sheryl B. I am the person who helped you with the ancestry. Nice to hear from you, we are all okay thanks.
I was surprised to learn Christine Jackson had never heard of the Limes, living so close to it.
"The Limes, Standish" is where Charles Henry Exley lived. He was awarded an MBE in the 1953 Coronation Honours List.
Hi everyone.I have gone back to researching my mother in laws family,NICHOLAS from Cheshire. One branch moved to Standish & their daughter became Kate Lewis & lived @ the Limes Farm,Standish.Would like to hear from anyone with connections.
Thanks,Kate
Just seen on the 1881 census that my paternal grandfather is showing that he was born that year, with the birth town of Standish showing and Parish of Standish with Langtree. The place of birth is shown at "The Limes Farm". I was always lead to believe that his family were from Orrell Mount, between Pemberton and Orrell Post. His name was George Grisdale Winnard and after marriage to my grandmother Sarah Hilton ,in 1905 he lived at Gathurst Road, Orrell Post. Does anyone else have any information about The Limes Farm in 1881?
My Grandma (Ivy Exley) ran The Limes for many years with my Granddad (Charles Exley) in the 1950/60's. It was a retirement home for ladies and I well remember the annual pilgrimage by coach to Southport and being fed at Woosey's Star Cafe.
My grandmother Hannah Prescott worked and was a resident here. Possibly around 1950. Seing the photo brought back memories.
The Limes, the detached house in the photo, not the farm, was owned by James Marsden (my 2x great grandfather) between about 1881 and 1907. He was the managing Director of Messrs Coop and Co. Dorning St., Wigan , where they made men’s suits coats etc. That building is still standing, unlike The Limes.
Has anyone any idea when The Limes stopped being a retirement home and when it was demolished to build houses? Thanks.
