Next door was a milliners shop named Culshaws which they also owned and their children(my 3 aunts) went on to make the clothes sold there.
Where was it John ?
The photos of this shop and the Horse and Jockey are on opposite sides of Scholes according to the Slope of the pavement Could this photo be "Back to Front"?
Hi John any chance you can send me larger scans of the two photographs? Thanks

The Horse and Jockey was number 54 and was next door to the shop.Directly behind the shop and pub was Horse and Jockey yard. The coordinates are shown in the thread under 'places' posted a couple of days ago. I can perhaps send the pictures by email as I am unsure how to do it on the WW website.
AB, it is the right way round, if it was back to front, the writing would also be back to front.
The reason it appears to be sloping the wrong way is that it has been photo copied on a slant, look at the blue border at the bottom that has cut half of the pavement off.
Jimmy, it must be the right way as you say BUT the height variation between the pavement and the window bottom suggests that this shop was on the right going up Scholes, whilst the Horse and Jockey was on the left.
i wonder if they are related to me because my nan and grandad came from scholes (oxford st) and my dad was born there
Yes AB, this is on the opposite side of the road from the pub.
What I was trying to resolve was where exactly in Scholes were these two buildings in relation to what's there now. The old street scape and house numbers have long since gone. Is there a reference point for either photo ?
Dodger put the coordinates for the pub on a thread in places named Horse and Jockey. I have been told that the pub was number 54 and the shop number 51
Dave C, the Horse and Jockey was just beyond the end of the Salvation Army church going up Scholes, I don't know where the shop was.
From the No 51 the shop must have between the crossing and Actons Court. In my Scholes days of the 40,s in that section was ,Moy-Toy,s Chinese laundry, Fosters Barbers ,Boltons, Herbalists and the Fleece and houses, there was 3 shops between Actons Court and Union St but their numbers would be in the 70,s
Look at scholes, places.Page one, second row down, second photo from the left.Centre of the photo the shop looks the same as this shop. With top window sticking out abit.
Betty you are spot on. The shop near the lamp post it is the same, you can tell by the double doors and the split window.
