Taken from a high vantage point this is another photo showing the transformation from a thriving community to the sanitised progressive (unloved - depends on your point of view!) area of the Scholes of today. It looks like a scene from a war film and what a desolate place Scholes looks. St Catharine's Church stands proudly over the scene with it's leaning spire (soon to be rebuilt straight). St Patrick's Church I think can also be seen just to the right. The unloved upside down house can also be seen, later to be demolished. The Wutchie? in Aspull dominates in the background.

I wish it were still like that now instead of the charmless place it is today

There was nothing wrong with the design of those Upside Down Houses aka Dutch Houses, probably just the location, the block that the council built on the site of the school at Marylebone were very much sought after, so much so that they have since been bought by the then council tenants and are snapped up when they come onto the market.

I can only reflect Scholes as it was in the late 50s, and very early 60s. It was a close, and very safe community, with caring compassionate people. In those few years, I walked many miles around Scholes, in all types of weather. It really did have a big heart. I married a Scholes girl, many years ago. Thank God we still have each other. I have not lived in Wigan for Forty nine years, but I still have great feelings for it, and especially it's citizens.

I lived in Church Court, the 'upside houses', from when they were first built 71! I lived there, a happy teenager, until leaving school in 76. They were: wonderful, fresh and clean new houses!!! Only problem: the plastic taps and, the central heating system, a large cupboard in the centre of the 'lounge'!!!!!!! Apart from that the area around was spacious, bright and, very clean. Wonderful hills for our bikes and made up 'alps'!

I have been there today visiting. This picture has broken a dream or wish. Whilst in Corlett Close, I wondered: "HOW DID THEY MANAGE TO BUILT SO MANY UPSIDE DOWN HOUSES HERE?"

Further feedback welcome; and thanks for a great memory!!!!
