Corner of Great George Street and Wallgate. Hasn't changed much over the years. The building painted white is still there

In the 1901 Census, my great Grandad lived in Great George Street, is it possible that this is the very street in your photo Ron?

Comment by: RON HUNT on 20th September 2012 at 22:59

Hi Susan yes it is the same street. I worked in Great George Street at Plessey's until 1974 when it closed..

Comment by: Susan Mint on 20th September 2012 at 23:30

I never knew where Great George Street was, even though my sister Jean McCracken used to work at Plesseys

152 Great George Street was the home of a Russian/Polish family by the name of Marks. The head of the family Michael Marks was in business as a Small Ware Dealer. The start of the Marks And Spencer Empire

Hi Maureen, my Great Grandad lived at 65, his name was James Holland and he was married to Mary Ellen. In the 1911 Census they were living in Lyon Street, I wonder if anyone has photos to that street?

Comment by: Josh on 21st September 2012 at 15:02

It appears that Michael Marks was 30 years of age in 1891 when he lived in Great George Street, Wigan and was described as a Market Trader. M&S's first leasehold shop was also in Wigan, perhaps the Council is missing an opportunity for a blue plaque to recognise the town's "contribution" to one of this countries iconic businesses.

Susan..we lived at no.23 so he wasn't that far off us..and of course Lyon Street was right facing ours..I don't recall the name though.
Daveh and Josh..I'm sure I saw a photo somewhere of the first shop they ever had being at the bottom of Makinsons Arcade on the right-hand side going down where the Jeweller's is now.

My Great Grandmother lived at 5 Gt. George St in 1891. I wonder if the house is still standing or how big it was as they were a family of 10

My Grandparents, Mary and Teddy Morley lived at 94 Gt. George St for many years. Teddy worked at the Baths and died in 1955. My best friend was Rita Kelly who lived at 99. How I miss those days.

I am trying to trace my grandfather and his parents. In the Baptism records for my grandfather in 1879, their address is given as Great George Street. My grandfather was Thomas Delamere Lee and his parents were William Henry Lee and Sarah Ellen - not sure if that is her surname or second name. I know that there was a family - the Newman family who were very kind to my grandfather when he was growing up - his mother had evidently died. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone recall a family by the name of Pringle or Bringle who lived on Great George Street in the 50's? I played with a girl named Theresa when I lived with my grandparents, Tom & May Livesey (124 Gr. George St). She lived across the street.

Hi, my grandma Isabella Seddon lived at 25 Great George Street along with some of her siblings. Confirmed there in 1921 when she would have been just 12, looked after by an Annie Matthews after her own parents passed away around 1914/15. Not clear that Annie was a relative, possibly just a neighbour.
