This is the view of Lorne Street, long since demolished, looking down towards fields which now contain school playing fields. The hill in the background is the remains of the coal slag from the Woodshaw Colliery which once existed at Top Lock, Aspull.

At he botoom was the rec. At the top end that still stands facing the side entrance to the church there was a couple of shops. One was a pie shop. But I don't remember the name but they where so good.

I think the pie shop was "Hansfords". The pies were good but the vanilla slices were to die for. As many were in those days the shop comprised the front room of the house with the family living there as well. The house is still there but alas no longer a shop, probably wouldn't be allowed these days. I remember Winstanley's fish and chip shop in Caunce St where we went for a cheap meal of fish chips and mushy peas or a wet mixture! Great they were too. We used to take our own bowls in those days. That's a laugh fish and chips a cheap meal! The shop was run by two ssister Ruth and Elizabeth? Winstanley and they lived in Lorne St near the sandhole end.

Ronald McDonald lived next door to Benfolds corner shop (grocers), as did his older brother George with their parents Hannah and Jimmy . We lived next door at number 66.

I am very interested to hear people's memories of the Benfold's corner shop. My grandparents owned it and my dad and his family grew up there. Also, my aunts and uncle didn't move too far away and lived in the surrounding streets for a while. One of them still lives in Wigan.
