Upside down flats
Upside down flats

This is the view from Hardybutts of the ‘upside down flats’, so nicknamed by the residents because the front door entrance was on the bedroom floor level. They proved to be very unpopular and were to be eventually demolished to be replaced by semi-detached properties.

I remember living in these! Not all bad though! My home you walked in; up the stairs before you met any living place. Large kitchen; a living room with a boiler in the middle of it!!!! Though, to have a bedroom with a balcony; that was something else!!!! Always remember the plastic taps!!! That was 1971! The picture is the end of Belvior Court, and the begining of Higham Court.

Comment by: cp on 9th October 2010 at 18:58

we used to play football there using that lamppost and a jacket as one goal and the lamp at the opposite end. Bradshaws used to live where that lad is climbing on the balcony

Comment by: Dave on 9th October 2010 at 22:59

The bottom car is definitely a Ford Corsair. Not sure of the one at the top.

Comment by: josie pennington nee beckett on 9th October 2010 at 23:59

my hubby says the bottom one is a corsair and the other could be a vaxall 101?

Comment by: josie pennington nee beckett on 10th October 2010 at 00:04

upon magnifiying the pic the top car is a mk 2 cortina.

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 10th October 2010 at 10:27

The top car is a Ford Cortina mk2, launched in 1966 and ended production in 1970, it give way to the Cortina mk3. The lower car is a Ford Corsair, it was launched in 1964, and ended production in 1970, after only six years. Ford never re-launched a new version of the model, and the name Corsair ended as well.

Comment by: Kenee on 10th October 2010 at 18:26

The lower car is deffo a Corsair, my mate had a 1968 2000E. The one above puzzled me for a while, its deffo NOT a 101, I used to have one. It’s the right shape for a Cortina but the back doesn’t look quite right. I thought it might be a Ford Taurus (German) there were a few about in the early seventies.
When enlarged, the extra trim and alloys identify it as a Cortina 1600E.

Comment by: John on 10th October 2010 at 20:37

It could be a 1600 or 2000 GT.. but this is just picky...

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 10th October 2010 at 20:59

If you require more information on the MK2 Cortina, it's a 1600 or 2000E model, the Rostyle wheels of Chrome and black is a give away. There was a GT version as well.

Comment by: John on 11th October 2010 at 19:56

Comment by: dave c on 13th October 2010 at 13:10

Where's the Rev Long when you need him. He'd have sorted out the make, model, sub species ect in no time !

Comment by: Top Man on 13th October 2010 at 19:40

The pie-piper man and fools like him spoil Wigan World.

Comment by: Rev David Long on 13th October 2010 at 21:23

Hey! Who's taking my name in vain? Cars are made for driving from A to B. They all look the same to me. When car makers tried to make their products differ from one another, I could keep up... but they're all peas out of the same computer pod these days.

Comment by: chris piper on 14th October 2010 at 09:01

Top man, if i upset you all with a little joke i apologise for that, it was nothing but a little joke with no malice meant at all anyone who knows me will tell you im not a nasty person and im no fool.

Comment by: John on 14th October 2010 at 12:05

Accepted Mr Piper and thank you. (sometimes only kidding can go a little too-far)

Comment by: Kenee on 14th October 2010 at 14:56

I never considered myself a car buff, I can only speak from my own experience about cars that I, or people I know, have owned. In this context cars can be very special in a nostalgic way, in the same way that buildings are, as the above postings testify. Must go now, Top Gear's coming on.

Comment by: Gerry on 21st October 2010 at 15:50

I agree with Rev Long, Cars only take you from A to B so how is it that I can only buy an A to Z when I want to go somewhere?

Comment by: John on 24th October 2010 at 19:56

Computers design Vehicles today but not these cars in question, it was the drawing board in the 60s. As for (from A to B) well, some people take pride in their cars and not just for there and back, people who use that fraise usually have rough cars, ie not clean and unroadworthy condition.

Comment by: Bob ( proud car owner) on 25th October 2010 at 14:34

Yes agreed john, people who say "it's only to get me from A to B" have neglected and dirty cars....That's why they say it!

Comment by: Gerry on 26th October 2010 at 10:30

How long before the ambulance gets here to rescue the boy impaled on the fence?

Comment by: John on 26th October 2010 at 18:53

Never... the rails have a smooth top... wrong again, eh gerry.

Comment by: Rob Fearn on 4th November 2019 at 12:02

Bradshaws definitely lived in the flat where the boy is sat on the railing. That lamppost was a wicket and goal post for many years, much to the annoyance of the lady in the flat behind it and I do now understand why a ball hitting your window every ten minutes may be more than slightly annoying, at the time she has just considered a cranky old cow.
Not sure if this photo can be accurately dated but if it where around 1974-5 then I think that may actually be me sat on the railing waiting for one of the three Bradshaw lads to come out and play football. David was the oldest and many years later he worked in the market as a butcher. I think the middle one was Wayne, but I may be wrong about this. If either of them read this, I seem to remember that I took the first ever hat trick of wickets against that lamppost and if they say otherwise they are liars.
Wendy something or other lived in the middle flat second floor.
I lived in the row of terraced houses on Hardybutts which face the upside down houses. The way the upside down houses were constructed, with various ramps for exiting and entering the landings with the front doors on them and with the chutes for disposing of rubbish and the walkways leading from one building to another, made them the perfect playground and the perfect place to create and get into lots of trouble. It would be easy to romanticise about the fact that we didn’t have much but we were happy, but let’s be honest it was a breeding ground for alcoholism, glue sniffing, child neglect and domestic violence, all of which were more or less tolerated. However, I loved it, it felt like a constant adventure.

Rob Fearn - you’re right about the Bradshaw’s. David, Wayne and Darren. Wayne is my dad and sadly passed away in 2020 so it was really lovely being able to read about when he was a child. Thanks for the comment :)
