An a j evans postcard from the late 1920's showing the top of Gerard st and looking to Liverpool rd, you can see all the buildings that were demolished in the 1970's, maybe some were knocked down in the 1960's I'm not sure.

That is just how it looked in the forties except that the road cobbles were covered

I remember it like that, not the cobbles. remember going on the trolley buses to my grandparents in Haydock..Used to love going upstairs in the Co-op..

I worked in Gerard St in 1969 at Richardsons Chemists, just out of shot on this photo. The co-op was still on the corner but more modern looking than on this photo.

What was the pub opposite St Oswald's entrance ? I think you can just see it in the distance. It was still there in 1970, I remember going in with a couple of mates.

Did the co-op later become a bicycle shop in the 70's?

Comment by: Roy Millett on 8th October 2010 at 21:04

Kenee, I'm not totally sure about this but something tells me the pub uou're thinking of was called the Queen's head. I always thought it was a bit strange having the King's Arms and the Queen's Head so close to each other. I could be wrong,
All the best,
Roy

the pub you are on about was the Oddfellows but it always got called Johnny Harts.

Comment by: Frank Walford on 9th October 2010 at 10:12

The Queens Head was further up opposite the church drive.Always got called The Top House.

Comment by: Frank Walford on 9th October 2010 at 11:50

misread your question ,sorry, the Oddfellows was opposite the Catholic Boys School which was next door to the Kings Arms in Liverpool Rd

Comment by: Kenee on 10th October 2010 at 18:39

Yes it was ‘The Top House’ I was thinking of Frank.

dh : The Co-Op was divided up into separate units, one was Winstanleys, who sold cycles.

the first shop on the right at the top of Garswood St was Northants Shoe Shop

Comment by: sagaman49 on 17th October 2010 at 17:14

Although I wasn't old enough to go in I remember the "Top House" but I don't remember the Oddfellows.
Does anyone have any photos of these pubs?
Come on Kenee you must have some gathering dust in the attic!

Comment by: Kenee on 18th October 2010 at 14:21

Sorry - just dust, no photos.
My grandma lived in one of the houses by The Queens Head, when she was a girl.

Comment by: F Walford on 23rd October 2010 at 18:20

sorry sagaman49 I should have said building on the left

Comment by: sagaman49 on 24th October 2010 at 11:33

OK, maybe I was old enough but I have no recollection of the Oddfellows. I must have had my eyes closed as I went passed on my bike.
What year(s)did the two pubs close and when did all the houses come down?

Comment by: Kenee on 28th October 2010 at 12:33

Sagaman49 & anyone who may be interested :
Have you looked at photos of Abram ?
On the First page there is a photo listed as 'Funeral of Maypole Colliery Disaster Victims, 1908'. It is mis-identified, actually showing a funeral for Edge Green Colliery disaster victims in Gerrard St.
