I have quite a few postcards issued by this guy He took some great photographs. Thank God someone had the foresight to make a record of how the town was in the late 19th century.
What a shame this pub isn't still standing.
Where abouts on Standishgate was it?
It was where Bryan House is today. The pub in the pic was replaced by another of the same name, which was demolished c.1973/74.
He were a clever lad that John Cooper if this was taken in 1875 Allan. He was only one. From this very site: September 30, 1938 - Death of Mr. John Lindsay Cooper, oldest photographer in Wigan, aged 64 years.
I'd say by the clothing worn it was late 1890's
Cracking photo.
Apologies Allan, There were two John Coopers and this will be the earlier one.
Wrist slapped.
Hi David, a little more detail on Mr. Cooper, he was listed in trade directorys as trading from 15 Harrogate St 1863 to 1865. Royal Oak Hotel, 111 Standishgate 1866 to 1869. Green Man Inn, Standishgate 1881 to 1885. Harrogate Inn, Harrogate St 1886 to 1890 and at 30 Poolstock in 1903. He was the landlord of these pubs as well as a photographer.
He was quite famous for his photographs of pit brow lasses in the 1860's and 70's when he used to sell the pictures commercially
The landlord, stood in the doorway was my Great Grandfather, Frank Maycock. His son, my grandfather, Edward Maycock is the small boy sat at the corner. My own Dad, Frank, would show me this every time it appeared in the Wigan Yobserver.
Observer, genuine typo.
