Chapel Lane during the demolition of the old LNWR Goods Shed, taken in 1983. Does anyone remember the cycle shop on the corner of Princess Street? They used to serve petrol through hoses stretched across the footpath.
Not much in the way of health and safety, although I don't any remember fires there!

Was that Melling's cycle shop?

I think the cycle shop belonged to Jack Watson

What about Jack Watson's cycle shop. Does that ring a bell! It was on the corner of Chapel Lane and Princess St.

The cycle shop did belong to Jack Watson and I think he had a son named Lewis.Near to the shop was a pub called The Bear`s Paw,after it closed down as a pub the police caught someone printing counterfeit dollars in the cellar

Chapel Lane being widened for the new ring road. The cooling towers dominate this picture. The railway bridge in Chapel Lane was only about 10 feet high and that forbid lorries and buses going that way until the road was lowered in the 1960s.
