Another Wigan photo extracted from the same 1939 Picture Post magazine. I have no idea where these air raid shelters were being constructed, it was mentioned it was in a slum clearance area, my guess is totally random since to me it resembles Greenough Street but I’m sure I will be corrected.

I was still living there until 1959 and the air raid shelters were being pulled down then.

Bernard, there’s a photo of walking day somewhere and it shows your mam stood in the doorway of your house.

The house at the back of the man standing belonged to a lovely little lady who was deaf and dumb..I was age fifteen and had just just back from holiday to the I.O.M. She asked where I’d been by hand signals and she remarked how tanned I was..I spent a good fifteen minutes with her..she was a little love..The house that is the last cream coloured one going up the street was my grandparents..and I think I spent as much time there as I did at home,my Mam always worked full time and I would call at my grandmas from School and she always had a lovely meal for both me and my brother..I could write a book on my Grandma.she was from County Clare and was always trying to learn me Irish dancing even as a little one..wouldn’t life be dull without memories.

How lucky you are Maureen to see your grandma’s house and to have known her . I don’t remember either of my grandmother’s. All I remember is the furniture that was hers and her best hat on the top shelf of the cupboard. I have visited Co Clare though and seen the fields where the famine victims lie. It’s a beautiful County and lovely people.

Thank you so much Veronica,I think as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to visit County Clare, alas I suppose it wasn’t to be..I’ve always imagined it to be a beautiful County to see.Im afraid my hubby wasn’t the travelling type…and now it’s too late for me..don’t you wish you could have bottled your childhood memories.
