A driver's eye view of oncoming traffic on Caroline street, taken from the cab of a concrete mixer on attempting to exit Chapel street in 1999.

Although taken 22 years ago, and complaints having been made to various bodies, this self same view exists today exactly as it did then.

That sign isn't there anymore.

Really James ?........
.............that's odd.
It was most certainly still there when I came past it this afternoon,
although the signage no longer reads Brooks, it now reads Abitare

In addition to the sign, if you care to go and look for yourself, there is also some species of bush growing beside it further obscuring the view of the oncoming traffic.
Perhaps it would be advisable for me to speak with someone from the council about it.
If only I could find someone on the council that was (a) interested and (b) not working from home.

The sign has been moved further back into Chapel Street, about a metre.

Re trees & bushes Ozy. We find the same on our travels about the country....coming up to junctions, roundabouts etc trees obscure roads signs & oncoming traffic. I never know whose responsiblity it is. Dont think it is the local council whose patch you are driving through....its the faceless ' Highways Dep '

If I hop on the train to Manchester, I usually leave my car parked on nearby Hodson Street.

This junction on Caroline Street is awful. One of the biggest issues is that some drivers come down Caroline Street from the Chapel Lane end doing crazy speeds - if you are trying to cross this junction it is always risky trying to move out quickly enough not to end up in a collision.

Another example of thoughtful signage are those chevron boards approaching the roundabout for the southbound M6 at junction 25 Landgate.

These boards make it practically impossible to see any traffic actually coming around the island until you're 10 metres or so from the give way markings on the tarmac.

And have you seen the laughable state of the kamikaze cycle lane at that junction?

Looking at that, it's little wonder many cyclists prefer to ride on
the pavement.

Ozy, re: junction 25 roundabout approach - the idea is to block the view of the oncoming traffic so you have to stop (or slow down to a crawl), rather than carry on at normal speed if there's nothing coming.
The rumour is, there's been a lot less accidents there since this 'screening' was implemented (exactly the opposite to what was forcast by many!)

Comment by: . Ozy . on 20th March 2022 at 12:48

Well James, if as you say the intention was to slow traffic down to a crawl, then it's certainly had the desired effect.

Can anyone tell me why so many roads and routes toward Wigan
town centre were closed earlier today, Sunday March 20th. I was
fed up seeing big red road signs showing " ROAD AHEAD CLOSED ".
Mesnes Road was closed, and the traffic was queueing up Wigan Lane
as far as the Cherry Gardens. Scot Lane was closed from the bottom
of Marsh Green toward Martland Park Industrial Area.

Comment by: Mick on 20th March 2022 at 14:13

Thats right James these screens do work, no point in flying up to any junction or roundabout then having to stop and wait, just slow down and take it in turns to use them.

Tut, Tut Hanson, where's the E boy.
Forcast could be a message to a troupe of actors.

There was some kind of organised athletic type event going on Ray.
Wigan 10 km run or something similar.
There were hundreds of runners coming down the driveway from the hall at about 1030. Many of the roads around the Brocket had been closed off and the traffic going up Wigan lane was backed up down as far as the Millstone.

I don't think James Hanson is all there upstairs.

The Irish have a word for it... I believe they call it " The Craic ".
The closest English translation of which , I suppose would be
" banter ", which roughly translates into having a bit of fun.

I personally don't see anything amiss with having a bit of fun , as myself, in the company of certain other individuals, have , over the past months and years attempted to inject a modicum of lightheartedness into proceedings , usually with the same inevitable downbeat results.

The bottom line being that any attempt at levity on this site will almost certainly elicit obtuse remarks from a notable few miserable bar stewards,

( " Wot's this gett'n t' do wi Wiggin' " being a commonly heard response )

accompanied on occasions by a resultant tendency for interesting and entertaining posters to abandon ship.

So don't abandon ship just yet James.....Not that I suppose for a moment you would ever even consider such a treacherous course of action.

Old boys of WGS are made of sterner stuff I'm sure.

Regards. Ozy.
