The boy in the trousers is Fred Sharrock and the other children are Nellie and Bert Hooton. Fred eventually bought the house from the Leigh-Pembertons. It was left to Nellie and Hilda Hooton following Fred's demise. It was sold on to Leslie Hooton, their younger brother. It is thought that the house was formerly named 'Cinnamon Cottage.

A wonderful photo, Maureen. I remember Hilda and Leslie Hooton well.

A fading picture, soon close to torn,
so rich so special a gown be born,
a fading moment, but fathoms deep,
a jewelled hand we close to keep..

Whups - if you are viewing pics on a laptop or desktop, you can also 'right click' on the picture, and then select 'View Image' from the drop down list that appears.

I'm struggling here Mick. So, where - as a guide - does Tontine Road become a branched affair on reaching Upholland, please?

Comment by: Mick LD on 22nd June 2020 at 21:20

Philip - travel along Tontine Rd towards UpHolland from the Delph Tavern, and after about 300 yards the road forks.
The 'left fork' is Higher Lane, which leads to Alma Hill and Hall Green. The cottage in the photo is about 50 yards up Higher Lane on the left hand side.
The 'right fork' is Church St, leading to the parish church and the centre of UpHolland village.

Higher Lane, I thought that is the road from Upholland to Parbold past Ashurst beacon, that starts as Mill Lane going uphill to Beacon Lane to Dalton church, and then downhill on Higher Lane to Parbold.

That's Higher Lane Dalton, Mr X.
We are discussing Higher Lane UpHolland - a completely different road.

CinnamonCottage would probably be correct as Higher Lane branches off Cinnamon Brow.

"50 yards up Higher Lane ... ". Thanks Mick - the way arrived, as roses.

Loved to visit this cottage in the sixties. The lady was a dinner lady at the Junior school, sadly unable to remember her name now. I know she used to visit a lady on Alma hill. Her husband wasn’t to keen on us young ones as we used to do a short cut through his garden to the rollie pollie fields. Many times i wish we could go back.

Hi! This is a photo of my 4th great grandparents (Edward Cross 1847-1926 and Ellen Fairhurst 1846-1929), alongside my 2nd great grandmother Esther “Nellie” Hooton (1897-1985). As mentioned above, it also includes Fred Sharrock and Herbert Hooton. I have a clearer photo if that would be appreciated? I was sent it from a niece of Nellie’s.
I have another photo of the “Cinnamon Cottage(?)” with some more of the family outside too.
If anyone has any more information/photos on the cottage or any of the people in the photo I would love to find out more!
