Shops on the corner of Mesnes Street leading to Upper Dicconson Street on the left include G. Price Grocery, Donovans fruit and vegetable shop and P. Murphy Bespoke Tailor in the 1960s.

Does anyone know approximately what numbers these properties would have been? My Grandfather had a gents tailors shop in Mesnes Street around the 1940’s.

Helen B - these shops reading left to right would have been all around 75 to 69 Mesnes Street; Price's grocers being 75, and WA Salter's chemist (partly out of shot)being 69.

The door between the grocers and tailors looks to be number 11.

MickLD
Thank you for your prompt and helpful information. Grandfather’s shop was 57 so I can now place it. I did have a feeling that it was around that part of Mesnes Street.

Grimsby - number 11 was at the Standishgate end of the street. I used to work at 51 Mesnes St, which was eight or nine doors down from Salters chemists in the photo.

Glad to help Helen B - if you look at Item #: 32414, also in this excellent set of pics posted by Frank, number 57 would have been the right hand half of the double fronted World Wide travel agents premises.

MickLD, 57 Mesnes Street would have been the left hand side of the double fronted worldwide travel shop as you look at it.

Phil - 57 Mesnes St was the right hand side of the travel agents. I worked at Aspinalls in the photo, and I know that was 51 Mesnes St because I had to write it out in full every time I completed a receipt for tradesmen. There are two shops (53 and 55) between Aspinalls and the double fronted World Wide travel, therefore it follows the right hand side of the travel agents is 57.

MickLD,
That’s great, thanks. I do remember Worldwide travel, think I booked a holiday there once, little did I know!

The property is now Northwood estate agents, Helen.

Was Salter’shop previously Tom Hughes’s bike shop?

Sorry Mick I can see your logic and the assumption you've made but you're wrong. The two shops adjacent to Aspinalls were 53 & 53A, as such the travel agent occupied 55 & 57 with 57 being on the left as you look at it.

Phil - you were correct, and I was wrong.
The 'rogue' number 53a confused me!
My apologies.

Booked my first foreign holiday in 1966 at World Wide Travel.. We went to Benidorm which was more of a fishing village at that time, nothing like it is now.

My mother's sister lived at 53a Mesnes Street, she died on the 14 September 1962 and is buried in Gidlow Cementery. She was born in Galway Ireland and migrated to Wigan.
