Bear's Paw was on corner of Chapel Lane and James St. and directly opposite our house

Was this the pub that was raided in the late '60's or early '70's for printing fake currency? I seem to remember a police raid, they broke down the front door? I was working in Chapel Lane at that time.

Yes Helen it was after it had closed down as a pub it was empty. (except for the criminals of course)

Still making money then, out of liquid assets. Was this anywhere near to where the R.A.F.A. Club was?.

Albert the RAFA club was further up the Lane on the corner of Queen St.

Helen B - I think the pub always had a bit of a reputation. I can certainly remember walking down Chapel Lane in the early 1960s, when I was too young to go to pubs, and my Dad telling me it was well known as a place where you could by anything from a bean to a battleship. Perhaps Albert could tell us if the reputation was deserved.

Never heard that myself Carolean I lived opposite as a child it was a lovely little pub with a snug where ladies could go and have a drink. We had many family parties there catered for by the lovely landlady Lily Rigby and her husband Harry we had lovely times in there this was in the 50s my aunt had her wedding reception there in 1954 and my Great Grandma's 85th birthday was held there wonderful memories memories.

Carolean. I have no recollection of this pub having a chequered reputation.

Anne, Albert. Thanks; nice to know it was a lovely pub. Suspect my dad was pulling my leg as I would only have been about 10 or 11 at that time. Its great though how a picture like this on Wigan World can cause a memory of me and him walking down the road over 50 years ago (where have they gone) to come flooding back
