An earlier photograph of the Carneys on another fine sunny day taken in Prescott Yard off Scholefield Lane. Also in shot are the shops on Scholefield Lane, St Catharine's school and Catherine Street leading on to Lorne St and Catherine Terrace where St Catharine's church is located.

I remember going to to Carney's Chip &Fish Shop. It will seem very strange these days, the boilers were coal fired Mr. Carney would stoke the fire periodically . You can only imagine the dangers if one of the pans sprang a leak .

Another brilliantly evocative photo for me - if we can scan enough of these together and use the latest computer technology I'm sure we could create a "living" 3D image of an environment long gone - just a wild thought.

Another fabulous photo John, I walked down that street as a little girl.

Does anyone have any photographs or memories of Sayers Yard in Scholes, I cannot find it on any of the old maps of Wigan, yet it existed as my grandmother Margaret Woosnam lived there as a little girl in the 1880's. Her father was a Baker and the rest of the family were carters and dealt in provisions. She later moved to Lime Street and Derby terrace.

This is my mother and grandfather. Sadly he died when I was very young but I have heard lots of stories from people saying what a wonderful gentleman he was and that the chips were the best in Wigan
