The 'dirt rook' was a wonderful play area for us children.
Remember it well. Ball St was still there, behind the Woodhouse Pub. The Pre-fabs had been demolished to the right of the pic, before the new houses & shops were built. Anybody remember when the road was cobbled from Springfield to Martland Mill?
That stone wall has seem some changes, formerly the boundary to Douglas Bank pit and still there today.
was their an air raid warning going on no people or traffic
i was born in woodhouse lane, so this brings back a lot of memories, spent many happy days playing round that area. art, can you remember the name of the shop opposite the woodhouses ? can't remember for the life of me. by the way christine, great photo !! any more ?
Hi Tony, sadly no. However if you look on the photos for Wigan Speedway, I have put two photographs of me getting autographs from two of the Speedway riders on the Woodhouse Lane Track in the early 50's.
Micky, the photo was taken on a Sunday. Remember the days when EVERYTHING stopped on Sundays?
Hi Christine nice memories of those days.Tony J The shop was that of the sisters Ethel and Phyllis Picton at the time,
thanks ever so much mygriffiths for the name of the shop, i remember it now.
Great picture!! Never seen old pics of Woodhouse Lane so far down - Beech Hill Lane going off to the right - taken from the front of the old Farm house which is still there...
Yes, the old farmhouse garden was always a beautiful sight, people used to come especially just to look at it. Also I'd forgotten how much space there was for us to play in, there seeemed to be grass everywhere! Hi Marlene I am sure you remember walking up this road to meet me at our house, then on to St.Andrew's Church on Sundays.
christine a girl lived near you whose name was i think sandra holden do you remember her,she used to hang about with us around beech hill
Hi Keith, yes she was Sandra Holding. My older sister Sheelagh Walford was nearer to her age. I played with her sister Jean. Other kids around there were, Angela and Joseph Leach, Graham Johnson, Malcolm Jenks and Brian Moss.
Thanks Christine do you know if Sandra or Jean are stll in Wigan and if so do you have any information on them?
Sorry Keith, I have no idea where they are now.
Great photo Christine. Jean Holding died a couple of years ago and her sister Sandra now l ives in Golbourne. I lived at 320a for 70 odd years and I remember The cobbles in Woodhouse Lane.
Hi Jean, I am so sorry to hear about Jean. They were great days, we children never seemed to spend much time indoors.
