Not a very good quality photo but it's the only one I have of my grandmother's shop which was demolished some years ago now to make way for the then new Civic Centre. As you look at the photo the Woolpack Inn is to the right and the Albion Inn is to the left. Despite appealing in Past Forward for more information I have never discovered any other pictures of the shop wher, I am told, I lived for the first year of my life!

Graham, was your Grandmother Mrs.Cunliffe. I used to go to a shop there in Millgate for Tea and Milk for my Dad's workshop in Burrows Yard early 60s.

Yes Kevin, my grandmother was Sarah Cunliffe (known as Sally). Graham

Graham, Mrs.Cunliffe was a lovely lady. I used to call in the shop regularly for various things including sigs and matches for some of the work force and tea, milk and sugar for the day time brews. There were also a couple of chewing gum slots on either side of the door "Juicy Fruit" and I think the other was Wrigleys. If you kept your eye open for an arrow pointing to the front of the machine you would get two packs. Those were the days !

Harold, Albion Yard was at 28 Millgate. My nan's shop was number 32. I presume the Albion Yard was between the shop and the Albion pub.

Hello again Harold. Looking at previous submissions to the site I see that my uncle, Norman Cunliffe had mentioned in 2015 that Albion Yard was the entry next to the shop at 32 Millgate. Was the name Entwistle by any chance?

Comment by: Harold Entwistle on 4th October 2023 at 08:26

Yes Graham it was Entwistle

Jimmy Walker who lived in Douglas Street had a cobblers shop in Millgate does anyone remember this or have a picture?
