Area now occupied by the Civic Centre. Either side of the bottom of Stairgate was the Elim Pentecostal and the Station Road Baptist Churches. Further along Station Road was Geo. Makinson and then the Empress Hall (Wigan Casino).
At the top of Stairgate was another Chapel and assorted buildings which included Mrs.Cunliffe's grocery shop and of course the Palais de Danse.

That's another really interesting picture .
What an assortment of buildings - and they were hiding the fantastic remains of Roman Wigan that were so recently vandalised.
Didn't Morrisons have a supermarket in a sort of massive portacabin in Station Road?

The church at the top of Stairgate was "The Christchurch."
It was home to the Sea Cadets "TS Lady Crawford SCC"

Morrison's had a portacabin shop where the Casino used to be - after they pulled it down in the early '80's

so many details in this brilliant photo, puzzled over the large building between Wiend and Millgate but must be the Palace Cinema

Not the Empire, Orrellite?

Not the Palace Orrelite, but the Empire. Many is the time when a "dashing young blade" trying to impress, would be met by the immortal words of Dick Barnes, the manager, who at the top of his voice would say "Un tha's not cummin in!"
