My Dad, Arthur Roberts (first on the left) taken at Alfred McAlpines works dinner I think. Don't know who are his work friends on the photo, but would love to hear from anyone who does. I would guess the photo was taken around 1977/78. Sadly my Dad died in 1983, aged just 60 years.

Kath,
Was your dad a fitter and did he live in Bryn?

Comment by: Kath Nicholson nee Roberts on 19th October 2008 at 20:05

Hello Trewyth, Yes my Dad was a fitter, but we lived in Downall Green, which is approx 2 miles from Bryn

Yes, Kath, I've got the right man!
I started work as a trainee quantity surveyor at Skelmersdale-Upholland bypass. I remember your dad well, he was a nice man, a sort of gentle giant. From what I remember he liked a pint on the way home from work. Sometimes I would go home in the same minibus as him but we never went straight home.I remember him knocking on the pub door for the landlord to open up on one occasion.
I'm sorry to hear that he died.

Kind regards

The chap on the right of the photo looks familiar. I think he worked at Crows Nest. Could it be Jock Brown?
Note the mobile phone sticking out of his pocket . Could it be a bit later than 77/78?

Oh good lord Kath :-0 It's your Dad !!! lol.
What a lovely lovely man he was, it really made me smile to see his photo. It's nice to have the memory jogged.

I could be wrong but I think one of the guys could be Kevin Reddington. I don't think Jock Brown is on the photograph. I was just starting for McAlpine and finished up working over 30 years for them.

Hi Trewyth, nice to hear your memories of my Dad, and you're right he was a great bloke and I miss him a lot. I think the 'mobile phone' you mentioned is actually more likely to be the bloke's glasses case tho' as I am sure it was pre-mobile phone days! Kindest Regards

Having re-checked that isn't Kevin Reddington. However the guy second on the right is Brian Fairclough who came from somewhere in the Wigan area.

Thanks Karen for your lovely comments about my Dad, I am biased I know because he was such a great Dad and family man, but he was also well liked and respected by so many people, and that makes me so proud x
