I remember the ladies in the picture. I used the Market as it used to be known, in the 60s/70s when Colin Cooke was the landlord. Really good pub, Youngers beer.
I remember going into the market with my mate John watkinson and he says pull us a pint Mary it"s my 18th birthday today and she says ooh John Watkinson and you"ve been coming in here all these years...good days.
The lady second from left is Mrs Doris Ashcroft. She lived in Lime Street,Scholes.Went to live in Goose green in 1963, and by then had left Market Hotel. I married her daughter Veronica. We now live in Blackpool since 1988, after living in Kent, for 24 years.
I stand to be corrected.Susan is correct, the photograph would have been taken in the 70s. My wife has told me that her mother carried on at the Market hotel, after she moved to Goose Green. Sorry to confuse every body
My dad Stan Brownlow took over the Market from Colin Cooke in 1976 and I remember little Mary very well.Always cheerful.
This was about the time that Colin Cook had the pub - he reminded me of Mr Pickwick! I used to go in there regularly and drink Newcy Brown. Great days- and nights!
The lady in the centre with t towel Margaret Pidgeon is my grandma
Those were the days. A Greengrocer would cross the threshold, early lunchtime, shout “pint of IPA Colin,” to which came the response, “Coming up Bernard.”
I did a Eurorail trip with two mates in 1976. Arrived back in Wigan around midday, headed straight from Northwestern station to The Market for a pie and a pint.
Lovely seeing a picture of Mary . She was a wonderful woman , very funny and always kind . I was good friends with Susan when we were young. Great memories .
