The steam engine my father used to look after. It was in No2 mill at Eckersleys and had the largest flywheel in the country. It was 30ft diameter weighing 100 tons and drove 32 no 2"ropes. It had a 6ft stroke and was 1600hp.

My dad,Bill Armstrong, was a manager at Swan Meadow Mill in 1960,and remember very well being taken to see the engine in full flight. What a magnificent experience--can still recall the polished brass, the gleaming paintwork, the smell of oil and steam and the sheer energy that the piston, con rod and flywheel generated.
