Opencast work and site reclamation at Blundells old colliery site in Billinge Road-Little Lane 1985. The site is now being developed as housing (Byrom Fields) and industrial units.
On this photo you can see the exposed coal seam that was being mined. This was of particular interest to me as it was the very same seam (the Wigan 9feet) where my Great Granddad Bradshaw was killed, along with 34 other men in the explosion of 1877. This is well documented in the microfilm of the Wigan Observer in the History shop
