This Leyland double deck bus was new to Wigan Corporation in the early 1960s. Its bodywork was by Massey Bros of Enfield Street. It is seen here
in its later life when it was owned by OK Motor Services of Bishop Auckland

In the 1960s Wigan Corporation had four double decker buses with the number 503 in the registration, 1946 lowbridge Leyland PD1 JP5503, 1953 Leyland PD2, AEK503, 1959 Leyland PD3, EJP503, and 1962 Leyland PD2, JJP503. The buses here are an ex Burnley, Nelson and Colne Leyland Royal Tiger single decker PCW959 (Wigan Corporation had nine similar buses JP9061-9064, AEK513-516 and DJP364 but with local Northern Counties bodies), ex Wigan Corporation and GMT Massey bodied JJP503 and a Southdown from Sussex Leyland PD3 will full fronted windows similar to Ribble, and the last Bolton Corporation PD3s.
By 1974 when Wigan Corporation was taken over by Greater Manchester Transport the last rear entrance double deckers had been withdrawn by 1972 with the exception of DJP754 that was the driver training bus. So it was all 81 of the front entrance short PD2 and long PD3 double deckers new between 1959 and 1968 passed to GMT, EJP501-510, GJP8-19, HEK705-707, HJP1-11, JJP502-509, KEK739-750, AEK1-10B, DEK2-3D, DEK4-7E and FEK1-9F with fleet numbers 3201-3222, 3230-3252, 3255-3266. 3270-3281. 3285-3288, 3290-3298. (DJP754 became 3200). Under GMT control the first buses to go were the JJP and KEK PD2 batches before the older PD3s, some had moved to Ashton under Lyne and Manchester depots before withdrawal in 1975/76. In 1977 went the EJP and AEK B batches, in 1978 the GJP batch (I think most were repainted GMT orange and white, and in 1979 went HEK706-707 and HJP2-11, In 1980 the DEK2-7 D/E batches and finally in late 1981 HJP1, FEK1-9F (some had moved to Oldham) and HEK705 the celebrity Wigan bus, being the last one in Corporation crimson and white, at Manchester museum since withdrawal.
