Although I'm willing to concede that H&S may hold a valid position, within reason, within the modern workplace, I feel obliged to admit also that I don't feel particularly comfortable with the place where the progression of H&S over the past 30 years has left us. In my view, to give just one example, anyone who requires a sign to warn them of the dangers of deep water, needs to experimentally wade in. thus, hopefully, removing them from the collective gene pool and thereby freeing up a little more oxygen to be shared amongst the remaining population who may possibly have an IQ that can be calculated in double digits.
Ozy, nice to hear from you again. I can emphasise with some of your comments having been in the construction industry for 50 years nearly. The problem today is that our modern generation when it comes to common sense sometimes lack it and needs to be directed around a hazard or danger whereas in our younger days we had our parents to warn us of the dangers (though signs were still displayed highlighting the danger or hazard.) Unfortunately, we live in a litigious society (brought on over the years by the legal guys advertising their services everywhere including A&E waiting areas). Therefore employers have to cover "their backsides" by signage, training, supervising. In the 1960's when I was training to be a civil engineer, and fell into a hole or manhole on the site, a foreman would say " you won't do that again" lesson learnt. Nowadays by law holes within the workplace have to be fenced off and similar watercourses do as well. Sign of the times if you pardon the pun. Oh and by the way, I have had my fair share of stupid incidents on site during my training years and that assisted me when I moved into Health & Safety and carried out training courses to the "lads on site".
