Horsey oil is still popular in the far east because it contains very high levels linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that's believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. It's thought to improve elasticity, wrinkles, acne, sunburn and eczema and is being sold in creams and face masks. Horse oil is also very good lubricant for the moving parts on your bike

"Used Up Horses"....how very sad! Probably had a lifetime of hard work and some with cruel masters. Heartbreaking.

There doesn't seem to have been much sensitivity in those days for horses or human beings for that matter in the workplace. The saying comes to mind 'Workhorse'.

True, Irene, another side to the Wigan of the past - when researching the 1920s in the Wigan Observer microfiches, court cases against people who used unfit or lame horses were found all the time.

It's so sad ..the cruelty that went on with dumb creatures some years ago..were they devoid of all feelings for the poor animals,.I dread to think what really went on.

Unfortunately even people today, there are cruel depraved humans, that still treat animals with extreme cruelty, especially dogs. Even in my life time, especially in the forties, people would go to local ponds, and throw a bag with unwanted puppies, or kittens in, into the pond. A brick being in the bag to weigh it down. One factor leading to this was poverty.

Albert my older brother did that with my cat, he put it in a sack with a brick and dropped it of the canal bridge in Gathurst

Mick. Local Authorities had places where you could take animals to be put down. You may recollect, especially in the war years, families were hard put to, to feed themselves, never mind animals.
