C. late 60's, early 70's. Despite the title, Warrington Commercials was in Ashton in Makerfield. Situated next door to The Colliers Arms in Warrington Road. Or ' The Dull Pick ', as we preferred to call it.

They moved to that site, from Great Sankey Warrington hence the name. They did repairs for Holtlaw Trans. Newton and Sankey Sugar, who i drove for.

You'll know Alan Jackson Thomas. Alan worked for Warrington Commercials and Sankey sugar, before he moved to Kwik Save Ashton depot. Terry Armstrong bought him first new S80 tractor unit from WCVs, PJP 846M 1973.
Central Trucks (DAF) took over the building later.
Great times Eddie.

You didn't come across a lad by the name of Baldwin during your time at Sankey did you Thomas? He may have been driving for George Pennington. I'm talking early 70's.

That's correct Colin, it did become a DAF agent. It burned to the ground at one point and it also became the premises of Robinson's saddlers, but I forget in which order. I don't know who occupies the site now as Robinson's moved into the old Brooke Bond premises in Lockett road, as you will no doubt already be aware.

Eddie Robinson is still at the side of The Bay Horse

Hi Eddie, yes in that order mate. Warrington Commercials, Dafs and then Saddlers. It burned down when Saddlers owned it.

Still Robinson's Eddie.

Saddlers moved to Brook Bond's old place on Lockett Rd, until this place was rebuilt after the fire.

Eddie: Just to try and put a time scale to it, I was about to leave school 1968 and had a interview for a job as a young driver starting as a second man.
I wanted to be a mechanic but the new D A F team there sold and transferred the wagons only they did not wish to go in to the garage business, i'am not sure if they did continue with the garage but in the window was new DAF wagons.

There was a large garage at the back of the building, John G. To the left of the photo was the show room, as you can see a new Foden is on show. To the right was the parts department. The place was still Foden in the 70s, I think Central Trucks (Daf) Took over in the late 70, or very early 80s.

Yes that's right Thomas. Later, Joe worked for Buckley Tankers in Warrington they ran B series ERFs at that time.
