We didn't win many, but we did enjoy the matches mainly against other Police Teams.
From left to right, rear
Referee Derek Jones (Not a police officer), Jack Webster, Frank Holcroft, Graham Smallshaw,
Don Lindley ( coach?/trainer?/etc), Peter Hodgkinson, Tom Kitchen, Jock McQuarry, Gerry Hull. (I do not recall the names of the 2 gents in civilian clothes, but so far as I know they were not Wigan Police Officers)
Front row,
Joseph Pey, myself, Jim Clinch, Colin Gaskell, Norman Collinson.
Unfortunately several have now passed away but I am not sure how many, may they R.I.P.
Some familiar faces there Aubrey, thanks for posting the pic.
I bumped into Graham Smallshaw in Wigan a few weeks ago.
The only ones I can remember Aubrey, are, yourself, Joe Pey, Jimmy Clinch, Jack Webster, Tommy Kitchen, and Frank Holcroft. A lot of water has passed under the bridge, in the meantime. A lot of esprit de corps in those far off days.
Albert,
Some of the others would have been in town centre whilst you were at Pemberton/Newtown so you probably never met them.
I do not know any of these fine gentlemen but I do wonder if I might have known Don Lindley's son who was a year older than myself when he attended Wigan GS - he went on to make a brief appearance in Wigan RL's first team.
GeorgeB,
Yes John is Don's son.
Great memories Aubrey, can i assume that Jim Pey was the son of Tom, the ex Chief Constable of Wigan.I lived next door to 'a Pey'on Park Road in 1965/6, he was a strange man, he also, as far as i can remember was related to Tom
Nice pic Aubrey of work colleagues.
Can you remember a detective called Weaver based in Wigan? I dated his daughter a few times.
Roy,
Joe Pey is on the photo, he is not the son of the ex Chief Constable but is related, nephew comes to mind but I am not sure.
Giovanni,
Yes I did know Ernie Weaver, he was a Detective Sergeant.
Roy; Tommy Pey was the son of the Chief Constable and he played cricket for the Wigan club. As you say, he was rather strange and he lived in Park Road and didn`t look after the property.
Correct Ernest, i lived at no7 and he lived at no5, which, as you say was rather uncared for, and so was he for that matter, my wife wasn't too pleased about living next door, although i think he was 'ok'.
