My grandad got killed at the Linsay pit in 1928
Sorry Kathleen - the engine's called 'Lindsay'. This photo's taken in Standish, nearer to the Shevington 's' bend road. Lindsay pit was next to Alexandra colliery in Whelley.
Sad info anyhow - sorry to hear that. Dangerous occupation is mining. My uncle Jack Bentham was injured by a roof fall at Giant's hall colliery in the '50's.
Steve. Are you sure this is John pit?
I'm comparing it with the pic I put up showing the shed with loco's outside. The shed on your pic looks to be different.
Also, the tank on legs looks like it could be for diesel?
Gidlow Wash comes to mind.
I think you're right Cliff, definitely not Johnpit shed
I'll take your word Cliff - I had it listed as John Pit but you're right.
This photo is looking down the side of the new loco shed at Gidlow Washery. Date must have been after Jan 1963 when Lindsay arrived from Chisnall. Lindsay had come to replace 'No 2' on the run to Crooke Docks. Off screen, to the left of No 2, would have been loco "John" parked out of use. The diesels and "Robin Hill" were too heavy for the bridge on the Crooke line.
