Thats not a very old photo at all.

Where and when was this taken.

There was a van stuck under the bridge at the bottom of Miry Lane last week. What do they do, let the tyres down.

Well Kwiksave went into administration in 2007, so it's in or before that year. I'm not sure where this is, but bridge strikes are common with HGV and as they seem to get bigger and carry more weight, its a growing concern for Network Rail. The Kwiksave artic I remember striking a railway bridge was in Southport were the trailer was a write-off. Once this happens, the road gets blocked off, the Police, Fire and Abulance are called. Network rail stops all trains useing the lines in both directions. Network rail has to carry out a safety bridge and line inspection. In all this could take several hours and could cost one million pounds in all.

They can drop the suspension or like you say deflate the tyres and pull it out the same way it went in.

The helmets the fire service are wearing they have only had for about 3 years so must of been in the last 3 years or so.

We were issued with those Gallet fire helmets in 2005. So it could be earlier than your estimation

A little more history: In 1998 Somerfield merged with Kwiksave, in 2006 Somerfield sold the Kwiksave brand and converted the profitable stores and it's large fleet of HGVs into Somerfields livery. Now owned by the Co-operative.

Greater Manchester only got the Gallets in 2009/2010. Came across there annual operating plan dated 18/11/2009 "Accelerate roll-out of new PPE, including new style fire helmets and fire hoods.", "All operational personnel issued with new Gallet helmet. and Fire Hoods"

I think JM WIGAN is an April fool!

Comment by: John on 1st April 2013 at 19:48

It's not GMC in attendance their helmets have black panels on the side more likely to be Merseyside or Cheshire who had Gallet helmets years before.

Comment by: JMWigan on 1st April 2013 at 22:07

My mistake for assuming it would be Wigan who attended. John you are very wise ;)

Don't know anything about the details discussed above; can only imagine the feeling in the pit of the driver's stomach when it was happening!!

Kevin, I believe you old chum, The truck involved only came into production long after I left so I can't help either. I do however remember a Ashton driver getting stuck under a bridge in Blackpool, that trailer was a write off also, I guess it would be late 70s when that happened. Best wishes Kevin !

Its Cobden Road railway bridge,Meols Cop Southport,(bridge height 10ft 9ins)

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 2nd April 2013 at 20:57

Spot on Harry, it was indeed Peel Street leading to Cobden Road, Southport PR8. The accident happend in 2006, when the driver took the wrong route and smashed into the low bridge at just over 10ft head room. The trailer hight being around 13ft...Merseyside fire service attended.
