Back in the recession of 1986, exacerbated by the unholy alliance between Wigan Council, The Miner's Union and French Kier, Wigan was under road construction everywhere, the idea was break the value of town centre businesses before the upcoming compulsory purchase.
Many of us got out early and quit business in that miserable environment. I went to Saudi Arabia on a two year contract, I hadn't been there long when a filiino characaturist, working at Sahary Studio, decided to immortalize my image. I have to say he really had me down to a tee, although he used a bit of poetic license turning an old plate camera into a Polaroid SX type.
The syringe replacing a cable release is suggesting that I pumped life blood into the Arab portrait business. The pillar & carpet represented the fact that I build my own studio props. The rats were local studios who kept spying and copying my style. And the books were the albums I imported from USA and Italy. I also introduced canvas portraits into Jeddah that is seen by the image bottom right and the kettle, well you can guess that, can't you?
Oh the keys on my belt, I kept loosing the keys so they gave me a hook to mae it easy for me.

The reason I left Wigan was everything to do with Wigan. The way the metropolitan borough council set out to screw, every business that paid rent to them, in council owned commercial premises, that is all of the market hall, most of Market Street and beyond. Quite a large number of traders in the Market were bakrupted by the council's actions, most were smart enough to stop paying rent so that by the time they closed up shop, while it wast enough to restart with, it was probably more than the compensation would have been.
I often wonder how some of the others got on, I know the late Roy Hurst went to Africa, the guys from Cheese Cabin to Israel, The Khan Brothers to Pakistan and I to Jeddah. some returned as the years rolled by, but a great institution was decimated by the selfish act of the few to turn a quint and loved part of Wigan into a faceless brick and concrete jungle.

Well said David Simm! Whats worse is that the Council haven't learned from previous mistakes. I went into the Market Hall a few weeks ago, what a shambles.A scene of dereliction, empty spaces where stalls had been all because of sky high rents and more increases to come. Will the last one out please turn off the lights.

They get me these fellows, always crying poverty yet the prices they charge at weddings is a mortgage. Get a good camera and ask friends to take them, just as good.

Comment by: David Simm on 6th July 2012 at 02:04

While you're bragging about how much can be saved by a friend with a good camera, why not post some pictures on line so we can all have a good laugh.

Comment by: Mick on 6th July 2012 at 10:23

Dave real reason Wigan market hall is not doing so well is all the customers went shopping at Morrisons and ASDA because they have more choice and a cheaper prices in what they buy there.

Mick, that may well be the fact today, I haven't lived in UK for over two decades, however it really wasn't the case in the seventies and eighties. Moreover there were stalls in the Market Hall whose products were quite unique and couldn't be found in the big supermarkets.

To-days cameras just point and take. It's the digital age. Just look at the photo quality of ordinary people that post to Photo-a-day,their all brill, its not like years ago with the old film camera.

You don't need professional Photography nowdays, buy a really good camera and what you dont like press delete.

Like I just said: post some images and let us all have a good laugh. Or perhaps you should take a look at this http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/c0.0.403.403/p403x403/404666_10150498646712725_2023223071_n.jpg

This posting was taken from a PhotoShop elements forum, clearly by a novice photographer who had just messed up someone's special day

"So, I just shot my first paid wedding over the weekend. Once I got home and started looking at the pictures, I noticed about 80% of the photos are out of focus!!! I'm not sure what I did wrong...I've never had pictures turn out this bad! I'm trying to work on them in photoshop, but it's just not getting them where they need to be. I work with PS Elements 10 and any and all advice/suggestions on how to work with these photos to enhance them would be greatly appreciated. Also, any thoughts on what went wrong would be helpful too! This has really shaken my confidence in taking on any more weddings."

He/She went on to ask for advice on how to prevent it so that it wouldn't affect future weddings, obviously intending to go on inflicting ignorance onto unsuspecting buyers

Just look at Photo-A Day, all top quality. Today you must look how much is the cost of ie a Wedding, you can save money by a member or friend of the family to take photos with a top camera. just click away and the ones they dont like delete. some sandisk memory cards hold hundreds of photos.

Comment by: Alf Brears on 7th July 2012 at 11:20

david simm will say that , he wants the work.

Comment by: Cowley on 7th July 2012 at 13:59

With a face like that, no wonder you left Wigan.

Comment by: David Simm Photography on 7th July 2012 at 15:01

"nd the ones they dont like delete. some sandisk memory cards hold hundreds of photos"

Ignorance is such sweet bliss! You never, ever delete in camera, that is the fastest way to screw up the memory card! Format only after all images are uploaded, but don't delete!

Deleted mine for years, no problems at all.

Comment by: David Simm Photography on 8th July 2012 at 05:13

So have many other until that day when you get the dreaded error message letting you know that windows can't copy bla bla bla because of a CRC (cyclic redundancy check). it is not a matter of if it is a matter of when

Comment by: Clarky on 8th July 2012 at 14:39

absolute nonsense.

http://www.drivesavers.com is a multi-million dollar business built on rescuing drives and storage cards for people who once thought like you.

Comment by: Flash Gordon on 8th July 2012 at 21:54

Its true david, you are talking out of your flash lens. I've been deleteing mine for years with no probs at all. After saying that, the technolygy is out there for all to use, and many ordenary people have turned out great photos in their own home. The skill is in the camera, and not the person who's taken it.

Comment by: Conner on 15th July 2012 at 09:13

We in the UK know how to take good pics. We are the best at everything.

Comment by: Garry on 15th July 2012 at 21:49

9-1 i guess you lost, you can't kid everyone.

Comment by: Fred Mason on 26th November 2012 at 18:00

I have to say that a professional photographer is exactly that...a professional photographer. He/she has studied hard and has lots of experience and training. Most simply have a knack for photography or an 'eye' for it.

When I go to the doctor, etc, I want to get a professional not someone who has read a book about it.
