I found this certificate in an old book called Mathematics for Miners that I bought from a car boot sale in Wigan some years ago.

Just looked up the 1901 Census and found a Thomas Yates aged 41 born Bickerstaffe living at 109 Darlington Street listed as an underlooker ( An official in charge of a mine and responsible to the undermanager and supervising the fireman.)All the other Thomas Yates are listed as Collier Hewer or with an occupation not associated with the coal mines. Maybe someone on WW is related to this man.
