Coal picking, was not that uncommon in the early sixties. I myself and my mother, used to go to the local sites which were derelict,but you had to dig for it. It was not lying about, waiting to be bagged. Anybody who did this bloody well worked for it. I would love to see todays generation,doing it.

I did lots of that with my dad, I think it was the Red Rock opencast area, hard work getting the bikes with two bags of coal to the top of Haigh but easy going down to the Finger Post, you had to have good brakes.
