The miners strike of 1893 was caused by a threatened reduction of 25% on the 1888 wage levels and affected 300,000 miners in the federated area of Yorkshire, Lancashire and the Midlands. The army was called in during 1893 to man the boilers. Many reports of great hardship, children ill and underfed,absent from school, scavenging coal tips etc and hence the interest of the Newspapers.
