PHOTO SHOWS WOODEN HEADGEARS BEFORE REPLACED BY STEEL ONES.I DON`T KNOW THE YEAR.MY GRANDFATHER HARRY ADAMSON WAS THE BANKSMAN AT NO.2 SHAFT.HERE HE IS ON THE LEFT WAITNG FOR THE CAGE TO COME UP FOR THE TWO MINERS TO GO DOWN.NOTE THE CLOTH CAPS THEY WERE WEARING,THEY DID`NT WEAR HELMETS IN THOSE DAYS.
when I worked at Stones colliery, Garswood, the men went underground in flat caps and put their helmets on in the far end where they had locked them on to their tool rods.
