An age when people expressed themselves in a positive and polite way, we now get texts and e-mails with little regard to grammar

The typist made a correction on the word ‘instruction’ substituting ‘u’ over ‘i’ and didn’t try to hide it…. Her boss either didn’t see it or let it go… which wasn’t good in those days for such an official letter. Also it looks like a mistake was made on the word
‘ Congratulations’ Many bosses would have had the letter re typed. It’s a lot less difficult these days to correct mistakes, it wasn’t so easy to correct mistakes on a manual typewriter without it showing.

I believe ' Monkee ' Mike Nesmith's mum invented typex .

Just made it worse Poet. There was another way of removing the error but I’m beggared if I can remember it.

Wasn't there some kind of "paper" that you put between the key and the paper and when you lined the key up to the mistake and pressed it it blanked out the wrong letter.. much neater than tippex.

And the misspelling of the headmaster's name as Chambres, twice.
Carelessness on the part of the typist and the boss. Stay behind after school, both of you!

Yes it was a kind of duplicate paper Ron. When I learned to ‘touch type’ - word processing had come in so all that kind of procedure died out. But we still had to know how to correct a mistake. I still have my certificates for passing the exams somewhere. It was what you would call ‘being mauled
t’ death’ !

His surname is actually spelled as Chambres and not the usual Chambers, type in your search bar Gordon Crewe Chambres there is some information on him and his family, and their address in Wigan was All Saints so I'm thinking that would have been part of Wigan Hall - maybe.

There's also the 's' in pleasure and the 'g' in congratulations that look to have had a different letter typed in before the s and g, and interestingly Education Offices at number 11 Standishgate is the building that Marks and Spencers was in before closing.

Cyril - Chambres lived at 31 Upper Dicconson Street, and 107 Mesnes Road, at different times during his headship.

For the third time of trying - number 21 Charles Street.

Right Tony, maybe on the Family Heritage site they were using the name of a one time council voting ward of Wigan.

The ecclesiastical parish, Cyril.

Comment by: Cyril on 30th June 2022 at 15:29

Yes, I was thinking along the lines of the old Electoral wards such as St. George or St. Thomas etc, and not as Father Jack Hackett would say, as it being being an Ecclesiastical matter. Isn't Google wonderful:-

There is extensive interesting history on the website of Wigan and the other districts that surround Wigan if anyone wishes to have a read about them.

An Ecumenical matter I thought Cyril .

Aye Poet I remembered as soon as I hit the submit button, and called out for a drink.
