Class 1C at John Rigby Grammar School taken in the academic year 1962 - 63.

Memory's a bit sketchy after 40 years but here's who I think they all are....

Back row, (l to r): John Mulligan, David Heyes, Can't remember, Stephen Owens, Joe Smith, Ron Naylor, David Smith

Next to back row: Joe Wallace, David Riley, Alan Heaton, ?, ?, John Moore, Tony Hankin, Peter Lacey, David Clapham, Paul McCormick.

Next to front row: Geoffrey Taylor, Peter Young, Alan Orrell, ?, ?, Kevin Edwards, John Knowles, Paul Bagshaw (Teacher)

Front row: Chris Boyle, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?

Apologies to those whose names escape me after all these years - and possibly to those whose names I've got wrong! Someone must know who they are???? (I am Second row, second from left, now sadly with rather less hair!)

My dad is Geoff Taylor, he is seated next to you. I showed him this photo the other day. He remembers you and some of the front row. You can contact me via email if you wish. he now lives in Darlington, County Durham.

It was sad news when I heard that, earlier this year, the teacher Mr Bagshaw died. I saw him as one of the good teachers. You might have seen some of his publications and videos he produced in his later years including the "vox pop"video of former pupils - with plenty of marvellous anecdotes about life at the school in the 1960's.

Very sad the death of Paul Bagshaw.I was at his funeral,he was a very nice man and made my early days at John Rigby very good.

I recently watched again the video produced by Paul Bagshaw of the Grammar School in the 1960's. One of the stars in that production of 2002 was a very distinguished looking Jack Knowles!

The boy front row, third left, is Alan Watkinson. Like me, in those days, he was quiet but hopefully survived the harsh regime of the Christian Brothers. I am now in Milton Keynes and happy to hear from classmates, especially Peter Young and Geoff Taylor.

Hello Chris. Not looked at this site for a long time. Not seen anyone apart from Jack Knowles and not seen him for over 15 years. Remember you used to live in Billinge Road Pemberton, I believe one of my great aunties used to know you and saw a picture of you in Wigan Observer. Lived in Standish now for 34 years. Good to know you are happy in MK. David Riley.

Sad, just seen that Paul Fairhurst died on the 22nd December 19. He is not on this picture but was scrum half on the rugby team as were many others on this picture. Seams like yesterday.

Very sad to hear of Paul Fairhurst passing in December. I played alongside Paul for the rugby team; he was a great scrum half and a really tough competitor [house games were hard matches back then!]. RIP Paul.

Now well and truly retired and relocated back up north, living by the sea (in the far distance!) in Southport, former home town of Paul Bagshaw. Does anyone know if his book is still in print?

Comment by: DAVID RILEY on 17th August 2021 at 15:16

Diary of A Southport Boy available at Amazon a bit pricy at £25 quid, I bought it from Smiths bookshop in Wigan for about £5 quid 20 years ago

Comment by: DAVID RILEY on 17th August 2021 at 16:22

Sorry the book you want is the Diary of a Southport Man when at John Rigby. Seems to be available at Amazon @ £75

Comment by: Stephen Byron on 22nd August 2021 at 18:34

As well as "Diary of a Southport Man" I also have a 2004 publication by Paul Bagshaw called "Buy This Book -you have to be joking". I got this from the man himself when he was selling signed copies at Smiths in Chapel Street, Southport. Price £4.99. It is not a laugh out loud book(!) and more a collection of eccentric anecdotes and one or two involving teachers such as Tony Hilton, Kevin Sharkey and Michael McMahon. I am not aware this is still available. My copies of both publications are still in good condition and are available to loan if anyone was really interested.

Not in this class but some characters here. Sad to hear of the passing of Paul Fairhurst.
Where could I access the Bagshaw videos that are mentioned here?

I am still in contact with some of us from Chorley.Dave Joyce, Martin Berry and Bob Snap I have the Bradshaw book people have commented on but Lewis took us for art. I still have my artbook from 1A all those years ago. Sad to hear about Paul Fairhurst. I remember him well.
