The map is from 1969, which is the last OS map the school appears on.
Thank you for this. my Mum's family lived here until they moved to Platt Bridge when the Maypole Pit was opened. they were all Methodists. Some of the family stayed. I remember going to visit in Daniels Lane.
Very interesting Bob, do you happen to have a map that shows the exact location of the old Cross Keys Pub? I can recall going past it many times but the exact location escapes me now.
I can recall going to see a circus at Daniels Lane, the school was still there then I think it would have been around 1968.
AW, The Cross Keys was situated on Ormskirk Road, the first building on the right in the row above "Skelmersdale & Holland". I think it was pulled down when the fire station was built
Thanks for the map, Bob. I know all that area quite well, used to go in the Tawd Vale every now and then. Green Waters and No3 and No4 pits just off the map, were our local swimming baths. Then the New Town planners got hold and ruined the place.
Thanks Bob
I believe the little pathway shown from Daniels Lane to Ormskirk Road came out on Ormskirk Road next to, or very close to The Cross Keys. Used to use it sometimes when getting to the bus.
I lived at Ormskirk Rd, Holland Moor by the old school on the corner of Back Lane & we would to walk down to Tawd Bridge & I knew Digmoor. My cousin Enid Barton was married at the Methodist Chapel there & my Dad had a piece of ground where he & a friend kept hens in a biggish way.
I remember Digmoor as a small village on the main road to Ormskirk where I went to school, this map of 1969 has me lost !
Ellen, if I remember correctly the bus stop was known as Cross Keys.
Helen, did your cousin Enid marry Harold, if so I know the family quite well in the 60's and 70's
Bob,you're right about the bus stop -I'd forgotten that about the bus stop being known as 'Cross Keys".
..I knew the Ashall family quite well too. The girls were friends of me and my sister.
Yes Bob, Enid married Harold Ashall.
I have seen Enid a couple of times in the last 2 years or so when in the Wigan area.
Think I saw Enid Ashall (retired teacher) in Pemberton a couple of weeks ago.
It's the same Enid. They had a son and daughter, Peter and Kathryn.
Harold was head at Holland Moor School
That's right Bob. Enid's mother was my Auntie Lizzie, ( Elizabeth Bradshaw ) my Dad's eldest sister.
I was christened at Digmoor Methodist Church 1957. Loved to walk and bike round the area in later years.
I lived on daniels lane and went to digmoor school in the 60's our house was only 2 doors down from the school.
