The first school building was erected on Warrington Road, opposite the Hall of Ince, by the local coal owners, Pearson & Knowles, in 1866, and the second in 1875. We are not sure which building was the earlier.
The date stone for the latter ("The Infant's (sic) School 1875) is in the garden of the Vicarage, which was built on the site of the nearer building.
The further building was converted into the church for the Parish in 1978, following the demolition of the former church - the School having moved out to the former Spring View School in Derby Street in 1974.
The School was Licensed for Worship, and was used until the new church was built in 1887. It is not known when the School took the name of the church, St. Mary's.

Thank you for the photo and the interesting information. I attended St Marys, for a short while, I was living in Cheltenham Avenue at the time. It was my first school and I started in January 1947 age 5, but still have indelible memories of it.
I went here, and was present for its centenary in 1967. A huge cake was made and everyone had a piece. Happy memories
I was here in the late 60’s. Mr Asbridge the headteacher lived about 100 yards away. Mrs Round and Miss Ingram 2 of my teachers. Playground was down in the left and we played football around what we called an “American twizzer” tree! Bizarre! It was really a sycamore!
