I found this photo when I was clearing through my late father's belongings. He was Benjamin Walls (the little chap, bottom LH corner). If anyone has any other photos for approx the same era that might include my Dad, I love to see them.

I "started" at St Catharines some 20 years after this photo was taken. By the time WWll started these children would be around around 21 years of age. I wonder what tales they could tell us.

There were 37 in the class but I'll bet that the majority could read, write and do their tables and the teacher looks like she ruled the roost as well.

What great condition this photo is in. My mum went to St Catharine's but probably started in 1929 when five years old. I also went to St Catharine's in 1954 and there are a couple of photos with me on under the school heading. If anyone has photos from 1929 on please post them.

The "old fashioned" plate cameras used large, by later standards, glass plates which gave a big negative, resulting (if the exposure was right) in a highly detailed image. That's why photos from yesteryear are much better in quality even going back into the 19th century, if these large plates were used.

1926 if correct meant that the school was just 94 years old, having been built I believe in 1832, even before the Church.

Indeed it is 1926 or earlier. In the summer of 1927 the family moved to Bircotes and Dad (Benjamin) went directly into a senior school at aged 10.In this photo you can see that the kids are of mixed ages.My Dad's parents were Ann and Albert Walls, both born in Wigan. My grandma Ann (Howarth) had a brother Peter who stayed in the Wigan area. Would love to know if anyone has any info.

Since posting this picture I have discovered more about my Dad's family. His Mum and Dad were Peter and Nancy Howarth. They had 3 children, Anne Jane (my grandmother)Peter and Robert. Also living with them were my Dad's aunt, Margaret Pierce and her daughter Annie. Areas in Wigan they lived were Longshoot, Haigh and Aspull. It would be interesting to find any links to these family members.

JohnAlan. My dad Harry Stewart would have probably started at the school with your mum. My dad lived on Vere Street, Wigan. If your mum's still around, does she remember my dad?
