Duncan do you know if that is ' Mrs Ashall ' in the centre in a light coloured coat ? If it is, it's my cousin Enid Ashall nee Barton, who married Harold Ashall who was headmaster at Holland Moor school. Where was the school in Upholland ?
One and the same, Helen.
Enid Ashall, nee Barton. Taught me at UpHolland Infants School.
The Infant and Junior Schools used to be on Higher Lane and Church St, respectively.
They were both moved to a new building in Mill Lane at Hall Green in the 1960s - the Infant School in 1966, and the Junior in 1969.
Helen, yes it is Mrs Ashall, she taught me at St Thomas infant school around 1965 then Mrs Plunkett took over her class. Other teachers at the school were Mrs Draper, Mrs Houghton and I think a Mrs Waterworth. Miss Gregory was the headmistress.
Miss Gladwin taught at Bishop Martin (Digmoor) in the late 1960's
That's right David, I knew Miss Gladwin moved to Skelmersdale after UpHolland, she must have gone to Aspull by around 1977. There was an article with photo in the Wigan Evening Post Thursday 24 June 2004 when Miss Gladwin retired states she had been had St Thomas, Aspull for 27 years.
Does anyone know wherein Upholland this function was held? I do not recognise the place -
Joan, I think the photo was taken at Digmoor maybe laying the foundation stone at Christ The Servant?
I remember Mrs Draper but can also remember a Miss Probert who I thought was the Head Mistress at the primary school? Can remember getting slapped hands for swinging my legs through the railings over higher lane....
Patricia, I remember Mrs Draper at Higher Lane School, though Miss Gregory was the headmistress in my time. Miss Probert retired before I went there in 1964 though I remember her being around the village.
I saw Miss Gladwin in Tesco a few years ago. She hadn't changed.
