This is the programme of the Methodist Primary School Concert, which took place on 21st June 1950. It was probably held in the Hall of the Methodist Church, which was opposite the Primary School in Dicconson Street. Parents would be invited, but it was usually Mums, Grandmas and Aunties who came, Dads would not have been able to get time off work.

I was at Dicconson St School about 2 years or so before the concert date. I well remember my time there & the school itself as I was at the time living with my Uncle & Aunt at 38 Dicconson St. I remember the carol services which were held in the Methodist Church on the corner of the street. For one service I had to give a reading, reciting verses out of the bible....And Lo there were shepherds abiding.....can recite the words from memory to this day.
I had to stand up above the congregation, beside the organ, for all to see.
The school would have probably been filed under 'deprived' these days. The flagged playground was under the school with walls all around, good for skipping games & two balls against the brick walls. 2/4 big classrooms either end up the wooden staircases, big hall in the middle used as a classroom, where we listened to the BBC radio programmes for schools & did 'music & movement'. Singing lessons across the road in the church hall. Cloakroom, lavs & washbasins downstairs & you did not dare to ask to be excused in lesson time!
Lots of memories of life in Dicconson Street.

Lovely to hear your comments about the Methodist School in Dicconson Street. I can remember the Christmas Carol Concerts too, going into the church was magic, the Christmas tree seemed to reach right up to the balcony where the school choir sat. Everyone had to file into the Church very quietly, and after we sat dowwn, I can remember looking to see where my Mum was sitting with Marjorie my little sister, I don't think we were allowed to wave! Happy days.

I was at Wigan Methodist School in 1962 and also sang in the choir. I echo what Dot said about the church and the Christmas Tree. I've been desperately trying to remember the name of the little alley behind the school which led to the back door of the Santus factory where we could buy misshapen sweets for 1d in little white triangular paper bags. Can anyone help?
