Hi Nadine, Can I ask do walking days still happen in Wigan?
They are a memory from my childhood.

They do Jack but sadly not nearly as grand or as big as they used to be. x

I'm afraid Walking Days are are fast becoming a memory for the middle aged and older generation Jack. They were a feature of the Social and Cultural way of life in the north of England ( and areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland) for much of the 20th Century, but inevitably in this day and age, greed, The Health and Safety Police ( a God alone knows why!) and apathy have all colluded to bring about the dramatic decline of this great tradition. Putting aside religious issues, which have never been a problem in Wigan as they might have been in other parts of the UK, our so called "publicly elected" politicians haven't helped by refusing road closures, or funding the totally un-necessary "policing", which they deem essential, making it virtually impossible to hold any form of public march, except of course if it's political, which is allowed (and for which Policing can always be found at public expense of course ). Thanks should mainly go to our Public spirited Politicians for the demise of this mainly northern institution.

Hi Karen, Thanks. I went to St Joseph's school and finished off our walking days on Market Square singing Faith of our fathers. These types of photo's take me back to those walking days.
