The photo shows Platt Lane Mission Infant girls and banner forming up in front of the Mission in Platt Lane in the early 1960s. The usual practice was for the Mission element of the walking day to walk up to St Catharine's Church led by St Catharines 5th Wigan Boys Brigade, Lifeboys and Life Dots, Girl Guides and Brownies either up Caunce Street or Linney Street to form up with the mother church. At this time we walked on the Staruday and the Sunday.
Quite why the second banner and ladies are facing down Platt Lane I am not sure perhaps some one can clarify.

Perhaps this group had turned round for the photograph? - and it's the others who are facing the right way.

Rev David Long. Re direction I did think of the reason you gave but I cannot for the life of me remember us walking down Platt Lane towards the Recreation Ground in all the years I was in the BB and Sunday School. We always ended up at the Rec after both the Saturday (for a field treat) and the Sunday walk for open air service.
