I've entered this under the heading Scholes, but is it Scholes or Whelley ?. Taken from the high rise flats with the Wutchie on the horizon and what I presume must be the Balcarres in the foreground. Date uncertain.

It's Scholes without a doubt. Whelley is much further on where those new houses just been built on the left hand side, what was the car sales. It then ends around what use to be the Alexandra pub now Tesco, then onto New Springs.

Are there any pics of Whelley just before what was the Alexandra ,about 60 yrs ago?

I think the light coloured buildings in the middle distance were prefabs. In the 80's, I worked with a chap named Wilf who lived in one of them. They're gone now of course, but I'm not sure what replaced them.

They were indeed pre-fabs- on Sole St and Durham St if I recall correctly. Can't remember the other streets.

Essex St. is the last street in Scholes.

Another thing that strikes me about those pre-fabs, was the fact that kids who lived in them walked to St Pat's school which was quite a distance to Hardybutts from there! That's something that wouldn't happen nowadays- more likely to be stuck in a traffic jam. God forbid having to walk that distance!

Garry. Yoy are correct about Whelley beginning at the old car sales but it carries on well past the old Alex pub. It ends just before the the now closed St John the Baptist school in New Springs. The last street on the right was Dorset Street, now long gone.

Brilliant pic of what would have been sold as a 'bright new future'. I remember the old Scholes being demolished. Many were glad to get out of their old homes with coal fires and outside privvies. They wanted the central heating and inside bathroom.

Oh I see John D, around the Mount area.
Thanks.
