The bus shelter near the phone kiosk was for the Wigan - UpHolland - Ormskirk - Southport bus, spent many a while waiting there.

Ribble Leyland National bus, with an SCK P registration, possibly 695 or 696, or route 362 to St Helens via Orrell and Billinge. The other bus to St Helens was the 320 via Platt Bridge, Ashton and Haydock that continued to Liverpool. The former Rylands Mill is visible adjacent to Mesnes Park with its tower and chimney. By the 1980s when this photograph was taken it, the mill was John England's mail order company. Incidentally there was and still is a chemist in the Gidlow area, that is John England's ( no relation).
