CORONATION PARTY AT HIGHFIELD 1953
Photo: FRED FOSTER

Stan Woods on the left, Roy Thomas on the right. Stan is no longer with us but Roy is still going at 83. We held the party in the old Infants School. Bert Bullough, the vicar had arranged for a barrel of bitter to be delivered and set up. Someone else had concocted a bowl of "Parish Punch". The Bishop of Warrington The Rev Claxton attended along with other local big wigs. The lads in the Young Peoples Guild were conscripted as waiters and we all wore waistcoats turned inside out to appear white. The false hair and beards were applied with spirit gum by a lady who was present. It was reckoned that there would be a glass of ale and a glass of Parish Punch for all the guests. The bar was set up in the infants cloakroom and we as waiters were carrying trays of drinks to the guests. There were a couple of men sat near the bar, and as we were going past, they were helping themselves from the trays. Finally Roy said "dont give them anymore they are nearly drunk as it is" We had to make detours past them to avoid them!!
