Have your sayHousing in Standish?

190 houses to be built on the former Bleachworks site, Prospect Hall to make way for flats. Does Standish need more housing?

Ron Hunt from Wigan says...
With all the houses being built in the Standish area. Wouldn't it make sense to reopen STANDISH Railway station??? Or perhaps that's it. "IT DOES MAKE SENSE"!!!!!!!!

Andy Price from Standish ex-pat says...
Why don't they leave the place alone. I visited my parents a couple of months ago and all the building work is destroying the character of the place. What happened to the sleepy little market town I grew up in?

Karen Mitchinson from Standish, Wigan says...
What do the residents of Standish have to do to stop the Planning Department allowing more & more houses to be built in Standish ? I can't believe permission has been passed for another 190 houses, thats at least 300 more people, 250 more cars, 150 more children. How can the roads, schools and doctors cope with this in such a small village ? Does money speak louder than the residents and who is getting the backhanders to allow it to happen ????

Jack from Standish says...
What a wonderful way of getting rid of an almost derelict factory. It is just what the area needs. The roads around Standish are a big problem and if the council should commit the extra funding they receive to improving roads in the area.

Kenny Balshaw from Standish says...
The proposed development will regenerate this miserable and dowdy part of Standish and make it a desirable place to live. About time too!

Dave from Shevington says...
Why dont these planners do their jobs, and bring in some legislation to stop all these trees being cut down. make it a criminal offence for building companies to cut down trees, if they do without permission, refusal of planning permission should follow. also planning officials, especially wigan metro are allowing new housing without adequate parking facilities, usually only enough room for 1 car, the other 2 are parking on the footpaths. look around wigan, especially shevington, there are more cars on the pavements than on the roads and the police are doing nothing at all about it. indeed, they themselves are parking all over the footpaths, ive seen 2 in my street this week.

Cliff Duxbury from Standish says...
What is Dave from Shevington on about? I consider the proposed new development to be an improvement on what is currently there. Hopefully more houses will bring the price of houses down for us young people.

mick whitehill from abram says...
i was brought up in standish, got married and moved out about 15 years ago,the place is going to ruin with all the new building, and as far as house prices dropping-you are living in a dreamworld,in standish 50,000 will buy you a rundown shell that needs complete remodernisation,it use to be such a lovely village, now its full of money gloating wannabees

David Kearsley from Standish says...
With the demand for new homes we must understand that houses have to be built somewhere and Standish is a well sought after area. If done properly this could be a successful development from a run down derelict site into a new thriving community. By properly, however, I mean that new local facilities must be included in the plan e.g. local shop, community facilities etc. Otherwise the already congested Standish 'village' centre will suffer even more!

Tom Hesketh from Wigan says...
Does anyone know what type of houses are being built?

John from new zealand says...
I remember Standish for its lovley views and quaint houses I an saddend to hear that it is being developed to the point that it is losing its identity. If I came home I am beginning to think I would not know my own town

Mike from Ex Wiganer in Yorkshire says...
I often visit my parents in Standish. The traffic through peak times is disgusting. Are the council going to improve the roads aswell, if not, what is already a bottle neck is going to be worse. I am in approval of redeveloping defunct sites especially as Standish is a much sought after area, but when the infrastructure cannot cope with the extra workload.

Fred from Upholland says...
Like Standish we in Upholland have issues with proposed developments. Green belt areas will be devastated and traffic flows reach dangerous levels if St Josephs College is allowed to be used to develop over 100 appartments! Has Greenbelt policy officially finished?

Chris from Wigan says...
If 190 new houses were to bring the price of housed down, then id love it...but we all know it wont. The bleachworks was a good empoyer, so why dont we generate a new employment opportunity on the site? Surely that would be better than another 190 families moving into the Wigan area looking or jobs?

Paul 'n' Jules from Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire says...
Does anyone know when they'll be finished and how much they'll cost? We quite like the sound of them so far! Also which is the best boozer within staggering distance?

LEN from WIGAN says...
YET AGAIN ANOTHER PART OF WIGAN BEING COVERED IN HOUSES. WERE ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE COMING FROM????? BUT DONT RUSH TO BUY A HOUSE ON THE BLEECH WORK SITE!NO WAIT TO SEE THE HOUSES THAT WILL BE BUILT ON THE MERE OAKS HOUSING ESTATE !!!!!!!! LIKE WE NEED MORE HOUSING ESTATES IN WIGAN... BET ITS NOT A WIGANER THAT MAKES THE DECISION

billy bob from (ex) Standish says...
i think its great, the bleach works were an eye sore.when will they be finished? bet they are a tidy price!!!think i'll stay in my rundown 1 bedroom flat in platt waz

Mr Davies from Standish says...
i think that the new houses are great instead of the Bleech works. the Bleech works was an eye sore. BUT and this is the big BUT, 190 is way in excess for a patch of land the size of my garden and i think that this is just a money making operation instead of an oppurtunity to improve the area. people who agree can email me at hsfil@hotmail.com

Josh from Maidenhead says...
i love standish; but i have never seen traffic as mad in my life, you people have some serious problems. you need more predestrian crossin's as well as traffic calmin' measures

callom from lollop says...
the traffic here is disasterious, i dunno what is happenin' to u standishers, but i know that it is not good. these houses will just make the problems worse

Dawn from Standish says...
Please note that the comments "stated" to be from Cliff Duxbury above were not provided by him - is someone using local names from previous questionnaires?

Chris from Wigan says...
We need houses! Towns are meant to expand! If you dont like what is being done then move out! they wont need to build anymore because we can have your houses instead, you bunch of moaning people who want to live in the past really p*** me off.

dave from standish says...
Its about time we thought ahead to what one day is inevitable. Compulsory purchase that rediculouse breeze block looking building of Batt & Brown,Spar and somerfield and make a proper junction to handle the traffic, more people would be served that way than shopping, which could be relocated nearby. Its only a matter of time so why not make life easier sooner than later instead of all this inconvenience to the majority to cater for the few. If we look back in 20 years or so,the penny might have dropped with the PLANNERS.

Steve from the Standish Homepage says...
Something needed to be done about the Bleachworks. The commercial suggestions were fairly ridiculous, so housing it is, but as others have said, 190 houses is a bit over the top. We should get all housing developers to build the community, not just build houses and run away with the profits. Want to build 10 houses, then build a car park too. 50 houses? Build a Youth Club. 190 houses? A new extension on all the local primary schools. This way it's not down to the council to fund the expanding services.

Fiona from Standish says...
I think if people want to live in Standish then we need to build more houses to accomodate them. However, I am very concerned about Standish becoming over populated, the traffic is terrible as it is!!

Sheri from ex-Standisher says...
I remember the same comments being made almost 20 years ago, before the big estates at Standish High, Rectory Lane, Almond Brook and Ashfield. I wonder how many of the people complaining live on these estates. The problem is that there is no effective democratic process. How many people know anything about the planning process. Look at what happens if there are objections, they are dismissed without a thorough investigation. Let us face the fact that democracy is an illusion both locally and nationally.

mike taylor from upholland says...
are you forgeting your houses were greenbelt once.he who is without sin. an all that

James from Standish says...
The bleechworks is short of a new community, Look at the plans they look really nice. Perfect for Standish, and Standish is better than anything Aspull and Orrell or any other parts of Wigan have to offer and this my dear friends is reflected in the house prices. Standish is Wigans premier area, the council will not ruin it, so stop worrying people

Paul from Warrington says...
I agree with James, standish is really nice, better than chesire in fact, its a shame aspull cant follow suit

kevin from upholland says...
i say buld even more houses on staandish and leave places like orrel and upholland alone

Martin from Standish says...
Please please please do something about the traffic. I have no problem with the additional housing but we must be allowed to move around in a sensible, timely and viable fashion. At peak times the bottle neck caused by the sheer volume of people trying to negotiate the Standish crossroads is frankly untenable. Planners. instead of making life worse for residents. get real and do something!!

sharon from Wirral says...
My parents live in standish and l visit on a regular basis. Having travelled for up to an hour in fairly calm traffic, I'm always greeted with a traffic jam coming in to standish from the M6. Surely if Standish needs more houses, it definately needs the volume of traffic being taken away from Standish Cross Roads. We have already seen situations such as HGV's getting stuck and even more fatal situations. Traffic lights and barriers or not the answer!!!

Cliff Duxbury from Standish says...
I'd like to build a big tar wi lard spakers on it and shart thew'em.

Vera from Kitt Green says...
Why don't the 'Power Men' in control of our land and its developement think ten times and act once. Give me the country anytime! Down with developement and think about our wild life!!

Heather Bentrom from Preston says...
Oh my goodness. I came visiting Wigan this June and came off at Junction 27. May i say i have never seen as much traffic in my life. I joined the queue at the dual carriageway, down almond brook road. I queued for over 80 minutes - i was disgusted to find it was merely routine traffic. Standish is a beautiful village, i think i'll move there - if i can afford it - but that traffic must be dealt with; its outraeous. I think that you should all road block the councils car park - give them a taste of their own medicine;or better still - a bomb up their arse!

Ste Vose from villager born and bred says...
just moved out of standish, nice place but awfull traffic/ stupid house prices. couldn't afford to live there for what i needed.

dave from bolton from bolton says...
well we need more housing due to southener wantin to buy for there pensions later in life ,it happenin all over what right is it the public eh?we dont count like the money does .we are just something off the bottom of our shoe (s---)we need someone like me on the council stand up and be counted .

ron leigh from standish says...
standish is full stop any more developement and build the ring road from the m6

Martin from Standish says...
I personally have no issue with the building of houses. Anywhere further out of the "centre" such as bleachworks is fine. My issue is with shops being knocked down to allow access to land behind it to squeeze a dozen houses or a small block of flats in. The traffic is a serious issue. I leave for work in Manchester at 7 am and return after the rush hour but even so I go all round the world to avoid the main traffic lights in the centre. I am lucky enough to not have been to the doctors for over 15 years and not yet have any children so schooling isn't an issue just yet either. I would however assume that these things have changed in a big way since I needed them and I think the suggestion from Steve regrding further development in the village dependant on how many houses are built would go a long way. However, would this not just drive prices of houses up even further to recoup extra building costs?

reddi8 from Standish says...
why is West Lancs council so strict about planning. You don`t see any estates being buit in Wrightington. Wigan just seems the opposite. All those flats being built will bring them more revenue but spoil it for us who already live there.

David Owen from Euxton says...
It is easier to plat fog than to get through Standish on the A49.The place is full.try parking a warden will be with you in seconds, they must hide in the grids.

phil from alicantie says...
how do wigan metro get permishon to build on greenbelt who gets all the back handers?standish was better as a village not a town.thats why i moved.over populated with new yuppees.regards ex true standisher

Local Teacher from Standish says...
I have bought one of these houses and it is a lovely place to be. The developers in my opinion have designed a development that matches the local conservation area. They are currently regenerating the Lakeand they are also revamping old large objects that they found on the site and displaying them around the development. No-one seems to have mentioned the people these developments bring in to a cummunity. I know I have something to offer Standish as I have moved from Leeds, there is also a Dentist and a Doctor who have moved in.

paul from standish says...
standish has moved on from the decades gone by,the council tax the thousands of houses that have been developed give the council is now providing the councilors with a better wage,so come on the people already here should be greatfull for the teacher the dentish and all the other outside people taking the jobs standish people would do,
be happy your now 20 cars from the traffic lights instead of 3,your bins are emptyed when you take them to the road, its not the bin mans fault he has more houses to service with the small amount of pay increase, the policeman in standish (when its open)station,i just cant think of all those thousands of pound extra income from the poll tax is going? thet are saving up of course to biuld a ring road,oh no there spending it on obscure parking and pavements in the VILLAGE
you havin a laff!no come on there making it safer, everybody else get cctv to make sure the laws of the land are being adeared too,we gett less police hours!
AND WHAT WILL WE DO ABOUT IT,

NOTHIN

Louise from Standish says...
I am absolutely appalled to hear that the secretary of standish cricket club has received large backhanders from Wainhomes to helppush through the sale of the cricket club. I hope that the relevant councillors do not sit on this matter and refuse the application wthout any processing.

Les from ex Standish says...
The reason Standish is being overbuilt is simply it is(was)a very nice place to live. The main reason though is successive govt's (including this labour govt) have said they require more houses and when the greedy developers decide they want to build somewhere they submit plans knowing they will eventually be approved, because if the council reject them they just appeal and the govt approves. The council refused planning permission on a number of occasions but as said before the developers appealed. At first the cuoncil fought the appeal but kept being overruled by the govt and considering the money spent on every appeal(which came out of the council tax)it soon became obvious the council were flogging a dead horse. So this time the council are not at fault.I daresay the covering of every green space in Standish with houses could have been sweetened if the houses were affordable to local people but I have yet to see one....You would think a local company like Wainhomes would put a bit back for the locals after the amount of money they've made building all over Standish.

dee from coppull nrchorley says...
YOU need eyes at the back and side of your head to drive throu STANDISH that also goes for pedestrians.what a nightmare.I use to live in STANDISH thank god im just down the road living in COPPULL at least you can drive throu without being in traffic jams.

Maggie from Coppull (ex standisher) says...
Thank god I moved out of Standish.More traffic than M25,more flats (appartments)than benidorm and you Standish lot will never go hungry with all those chippies, chinese, indian, italian etc, etc, etc.I love the cycle lane on Wigan road too, what a waste of money for folks to park their cars on.Still i suppose your high poll tax has to be spent on something....

Yvonne from Wigan says...
Just reading your comments make me laugh. If you dont like living there then just move out.

John Joseph from Red Rock Haigh says...

I live behind the new Houses on the bleach works site and although I have lost the super sunset through my front window.

By retreating to the rear I still love the cool calm and peaceful area

JJ

Isabella Marsden from Standish says...
Yvonne from Wigan wouldnt be laughing if it were in here backyard.
If you dont live in standish mind your own business, you might have to fight for your little piece of wigan you call home in the future. Standish is full now, the traffic is horrendous, schools are oversubscribed, we pay our council tax higher than most areas because we want to live here, but we dont want to become another winstanley. Morris Homes, Wainhomes etc need to take a good look at this part of the country before they ruin it completely. But these men without souls sleep very well at night as long as they as the money keeps rolling in, because unfortunatley thats all that appears to matter these days.

Why dont you all realise that its because the labour councillors get voted in year after year. You could put monkeys to stand for labour and they would get in, probably more intelligent as well. The Ainscoughs don't give a damn about Standish or the local community of Wigan as long as they are getting what they want. Martin Ainscough is trying to own half of Wigan along with his partner Dave Whelan, these greedy multi millionaires are power mad. Why is the Council planning to give them Drumcroon on a 125 year lease what's the matter with 20 years to see how the project goes. Why do they think they are suitably qualified to cater for children with special needs. Its bullshit. He's already got the old Rushtons Mill (gas showrooms) free of charge for his apprenticeship scheme and then there's the land they were given for the boys and girls club if he gets Drumcroon what a nice little piece of Wigan which is in a conservation area he has to do with what he wants with. Nice move he made announcing that the council was giving him Drumcroon, forcing their hand to make them look bad if he doesnt get it, unless of course he knows something we dont??he could easly afford to pay for the building if he's that concerned about these youngsters. 125,000 each a drop in the ocean to them. After all the council is desperaate for every penny it can get. Remeber this is the property of the people of Wigan, not the council. I wish people would put their votes where they count. Our Independent Councillors work hard in standish we should support them.

Tony Beattie from Chorley (lancashire) says...
I Live In Standish In The 1970's and Move To Chorley 1972

Gretchen kane from Standish says...
really. what gives people the god dam right to tell people what to do with their own land. go buy your own land and do what you want with it

valentine frank from chorley says...
hi just in process of buying a lodge view home on the old bleach works .
be intrested to hear any views of residents living there .....

Megan from Standish says...
I think they are pointless standish will become more busy and this is taking up wildlife spots and i think its awful tbh

David from Standish says...
Just found this thread. Obviously started several years ago. We now (2014) are faced with major developments in prospect at Rectory Lane, Pepper Lane and further smaller developments around Standish. The council are quite happy to go along with the Inspector's "build it in Standish" plans because this brings in Council Tax levels higher than any other area in the borough. The various protests/campaigns etc.. Organised by the local Independent Councillors have been valiant but a waste of time. I have lived in Standish for 35 years and love the place. We all have to get used to the fact that Standish is full and cannot cope. Also that it will get even more full and the "powers that be" don't give a damn.

Shiela from Standish says...
I agree wholeheartedly with David. It would seem that as far as property development is concerned democracy is truly dead. Standish residents have campaigned long and hard against further housing in the area but the decisions are made by people who do not have to live with the consequences. Where is the common sense? It isn't JUST that it will completely spoil a lovely area, it is totally impractical. It isn't a few hundred houses they're proposing, it's a couple of THOUSAND!And with no obvious benefit to the existing community. One of the main objections to the proposals is that of increased traffic. I understand that a traffic census has been taken and have no doubt that the result will prove that the daily congestion we all suffer is actually all in our mind and is not really a problem. Whatever argument we offer, however valid, will always be dismissed as if we are petulant children who do not know what is good for us. Those who do not live in Standish and suggest that residents should move if they are not happy with the proposed developments are not living in the real world if they think that is a viable option for many people. Whatever do we have to do to stop this madness? And what is more, who will really want to move to an area where schools are full to bursting, roads are jammed and there are no recreational facilities to cater for the growing population? Even the pretty scenery will be diminished. Doesn't sound quite so desirable now, does it?

Dave from Nassau says...
I understand that a link road between Almond Brook Rd & Preston Rd has been proposed to reduce the amount of traffic passing through the centre of Standish. I also learn that an opposition group has sprung up against these plans. I am baffled! The new houses will be built. Standish centre will represent a permanent car
park (car parking or lack of is a whole new issue) so surely this link road is a good idea.

John Marsh from Standish says...
Standish UDC was taken over by Wigan metro on April 1st 1974. Wigan metro have since been taking the pee wee out of Standish ever since. They now claim Ashfield Park is safe from developers but the fact is this only means the playground which will be incorporated into plans of a new housing estate by Permisson. Wigan council are LIARS and have robbed Standish blind since 1974, the potholes remain ...all money the government gave went into resufacing in Wigan itself. Its time Standish UDC was reinstated and all council tax levies set by them raised and spent in Standish and not into building more white elephants in Wigan itself.

Anne Heyworth from Coppull,Chorley. says...
I was born in Standish,in a row of old houses that was always known as Ghost Row.There was a large meadow across the road from us and a cornfield behind. At the rate houses are being built there will soon be no fields left.

Holly from Bradshaw says...
I had some happy times in the late 50's,when my Nana lived on Old Pepper Lane.I could cut through the fields,on what seemed to me as a child then,a hot sunny day with blue skies, and meadows, and go to the fish ponds up at Wrightington, with my grandad. It seemed back then, there were very few houses about.I would go from my nan's in Beechill,to see my nan in Standish, long time ago now it seems, times change,to me some times not always for the better.
