Victorian Coin

Coin presented by Sir Francis Sharp Powell, Baronet M.P.

A coin commemorating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (60yrs). Although Queen Victoria wasn't present nor attended the town at that time, Wigan people always threw parties to celebrate Royal occasions.

It is likely that the party would have been held in Mesnes Park, and that the coin would have been given to people invited. Dated June 22, 1897 the person who received this was really honoured. A small hole has been drilled through it so that it can be worn around the neck on a chain (or maybe a piece of string).

Actual size: 1¼" (32mm) diameter.
