Foreword

BY

HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR OF WIGAN.

Mayoralty of Wigan
MAYOR'S PARLOUR,

TOWN HALL,

WIGAN.

24TH NOVEMBER, 1930.

IT is with pleasure that I write a foreword to this pleasing little booklet.

IT is charmingly conceived, and does credit to Messrs, Heyes & Company, and to the town of Wigan, Messrs. J. Starr & Sons, Ltd., are to be commended on such an attractive production.

I DESIRE to bring it to the notice of the citizens of Wigan, and to suggest that it could be used with advantage as a Christmas Card.

THE cost of production is being borne by Messrs. Heyes & Company, and the whole of the proceeds will be devoted to the Wigan Infirmary, for which generosity the firm is to be complimented.

THE firm is very enterprising, and the Corporation appreciate the local patriotism which has prompted them to attach the name of "Wigan" to their products, and which have a well established reputation for reliability.

CUSTOMERS have been secured in Iceland, Scandinavia, Australia, India, South America, and Canada, the majority of whom have expressed appreciation of the historical portion of the firm's Monthly Review.

THE great need of our town to-day is increased business. The town of which I am proud to be the 685th Mayor, is undoubtedly a good business centre, being on the main line midway between Liverpool and Manchester, and only twenty miles from the two latter cities.

IT is fortunate in having splendid road, rail and water communications.

THE Corporation own all public services and can supply electricity, gas and water on the most favourable terms, and workpeople of both sexes are available in great numbers.

SPECIAL inducements are offered to new industries, and land leased on exceedingly favourable terms for these purposes.

WIGAN is proud of its associations and traditions, and the present booklet shows its relationship with the past, but it is still prouder of its public amenities of the present day and extends a welcome hand to firms, who like Messrs. Heyes & Company are prepared to make the name of Wigan synonymous with reliability of commercial products.

I AM sure that this little booklet will do its part in still extending the business of one of Wigan's most enterprising firms, and I again ask my fellow townspeople to give it their generous support, and thus help to spread reliable knowledge concerning Wigan, and, at the same time, assist our local Infirmary.

ROBERT LEWIS,
MAYOR.
